Does anyone have information on this family? The 1870 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 54th District 18th Ward, taken on the 20th of June shows a Michael Shields, 27 years of age and wife Mary, 22 years of age with one child, Maggie age 3/12. The 1880 census for Philadelphia -Film FHL #1255104 National Archive film T9-1184 Page 130B shows a Michael Shields age 35, wife Mary age 31, daughter Maggie age 10, son Daniel age 7, and a sepson [???]son Michael age 3, and cousin John James age 25. There is a Michael Shields listed in the 1900 census of Philadelphia, PA taken on June 11 in the 36th Ward of Enumeration District #936. This Michael Shields, street paver, is living on Penrose Street and is listed as born in March 1850 in Ireland and married for 32 years. This doesn't work out as it shows his wife as Mary, born December 1844 and born in Pennsylvania. It shows him living in the United States since 1870 and 30 years. The years married and years in this country don't work out if she was born in Pennsylvania, but the census have a lot of incorrect numbers. I do believe this to be the correct Michael Shields as our ancestor. This census shows Michael's father and mother born in Ireland. Mary's father born in Prussia [now Germany or Poland] and her mother born in Ireland. Two children are listed in this census. Daisy M., daughter born October, 1886 in Pennsylvania and a son John J. born June, 1883. Mary is shown as having seven children with four still living in 1900. The 1910 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania taken on April 18th on Passjunk Ave?? next is Jackson Street shows a Michael Shields age 65, married 43 years, born in Ireland and coming to the United States in 1866 and Naturalized [this would help the data from the 1900 census since his arrival date to this country would explan the marriage of 32 years] . His wife is Mary A. born in Pennsylvania, age 62, having gave birth to seven children, with three living. The rest of the family in this household are Daniel, son, age 37, married 6 years; daughter Mary E. Miller, age 27, married 8 years with three children, two living; a son in law, Frank Miller age 27; Marie Miller, niece, age 7; John Miller, nephew, age 3; and John J. Shields, son, age 25. The father, Michael's occupation is General Contractor. The son in law, Frank Miller is a cement contractor. In looking for a Michael Shields in the 1920 census Index, I was unable to find a Michael Shields, so I looked up Frank Miller, his son in law and in the household in the previous census. I find the Frank Miller family and living with them or adjacent is a Daniel Shields age 77, widowed and coming to the US in 1866, naturalized it looks like 1876?, with son John age 48 and son Michael age 35. I believe this to be the family with the names wrong. I think Daniel should be Michael and Michael, Daniel. This was taken on January 5th 1920, Enumeration District 809, Sheet 2A, Ward 26. A phone call to the Holy Cross Cemetery in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, located about five miles from Philadelphia, phone number 1-610-626-2206 made on January 10th 2005, informed that Margaret C. Shields Black was buried in Section 13, Range 10, Lot 52 on December 12th 1907. Also listed in this lot are Michael Shields, age 20, December 10 1907; baby, Margaret Zennie buried on August 16th 1916; and Michael Shields, age 76, buried August 22nd 1925.
Is any one researching or does anyone have information on this family? The first documentation that I have for Margaret Shields is the 1870 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania showing her as a daughter, Maggie, age three months, of Michael and Mary Shields. Margaret's mothers maiden name is verified on the Physician's death certificate #29973 for Margaret, listing her parents as Michael Shields and mother as Mary A. Seman. Margaret and her husband, Josiah Black were living at 2612 Coral Street in Philadelphia at the time of her death. Maggie died of a heart attack at the age of 37 while sweeping the floor. She is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery addressed as Lansdown, PA, Delaware County,19050; 610-626-2206. Located off route 13 near Darby and on Bailey Road and Yeadon Avenue. The grave is unmarked. Her mother, Mary Semon Shields identified by ID number 00296168, owned four plots together in section 13, row or range10, lot 52. Section 13 is located off Macdade Street in the corner of Dolorosa and Lazarus Avenue. The cemeteries records show Maggie and supposedly her brother, Michael buried on the same day. Also buried on the same lot are Michael Shields, probably Maggie's father and her niece, 4 month old Margaret Zinnie. JoAnn and I visited this cemetery on 07/16/2005. A cemetery map is in my files. On a call to the cemetery on July 27, 2005 to question a number. The gentleman gave me the following information. Mary A. Shields purchased graves three and four in lot 52 in 1907. Buried in grave number three at a depth of 10 feet is Daniel Shields, March 21, 1924, age 51 years, 8 Months; buried at 8 feet is Mary A. Shields, October 13, 1931, age 72 years; buried at 6 feet is John Shields, April 27, 1934, age 48 years. Buried in grave number four at a depth of 10 feet is Michael Shields, December 10, 1907, age 20 years; buried at 8 feet is Margaret Black, December 10, 1907, age 37 years; buried at 6 feet is Margaret Zennie, August 16, 1916, age 4 months; and buried at 5 feet is Michael Shields, August 27, 1925, age 76.

I went back thru my info to have another look. I didn't find her, but found where you might find her. I received a small booklet, Perpetual Pioneers, The Migration of Caleb Seaman's Descendants in the 19th Century. It is full of interesting info that is very likely your Sarah's family. I'll type a bit around your Sarah's time: there are maps of the route they took to get to Canada. pictures of their houses, a picture of David and Huldah Seaman 1850, they had 14 children. 'It was here that David Seaman, his eldest son, Theodore, and all the younger ones, limited only as skill and strength dictated, built a large house of native limestone, one of the first to be built in the township from this material. Stone from the out-croppings of the niagara Escarpment is an excellent building material, and, if this needs proof, the house is still in use as a residence after 125 years.' 'Samuel Seaman was Caleb's second son. He was probably 11 ye! ars of age when the family fled to Canada. he settled at Chantry, Ontario inland from the original Loyalist settlement' it goes on and on, good stuff.
