    1. [SEAMAN-L] Re: LDS SITE
    2. The site is at:http://lds-online.com/family.htm An article from the Global Gazette in February says: LDS Family History Library WebSite in 1999 Rumors are flying about the possibility that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City might be starting a website. It's true. Curt Witcher, a director of GENTECH, attended their annual conference recently in Utah and came back with details about this long-awaited site. He shared them with me. The site will begin sometime in the second quarter of this year. Its name will be FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Services. FamilySearch is the copyright name of their CD-ROM genealogical indexes. This might make you think that these indexes will be available at the site, but this is not so. I know that many people will be disappointed that the International Genealogical Index and Ancestry File will not be included initially on the site... The online site will have the Family History Library Catalog. This is not the same as the version at the family history centers. It will be considerably enhanced. As well as author, title and LDS film number, it will include place names, surnames, keywords and subjects, all in searchable fields. This means that for the first time, researchers will be able to use the Family History Library catalog in the same way they use online library catalogs elsewhere (in public or academic libraries). The flexibility of the catalog will mean that we can find more books and films, more easily. The big question for most people who live far from Salt Lake (or even far from a branch family history center) is: when will the other FamilySearch options be included on the website. No decisions have been made about this yet. As I mentioned in my last column, the Genealogical Society of Utah, the family history arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has now begun a publications program selling sets of CD-ROMs on particular topics. I mentioned a six-disk set of British vital records indexes. Witcher informs me there are also sets of Australian Vital Records (price US$5.00) and United States Vital Records (price US$15.00). At the moment I am unsure exactly what is on these. Other projected series to be made available soon are vital records sets for Continental Europe, Latin America and Scandinavia, Ellis Island immigration records, the 1880 U.S. census and the 1881 British census (scheduled for summer 1999). The latter will be grouped in regions, but there will also be a nation-wide index. >>

    3. As part of preparing to give a talk at the annual meeting of our local genealogical society I came across an interesting comparison of some of the "leaders of the pack" in genealogical software. This chart can be downloaded in Microsoft EXCEL or in Adobe Acrobat format. Because it was generated by one of the manufacturers it is considered biased, however, I found ALL of the information factual so the bias is not TOO evident. [other than listing their company's feature list] So, if you are in the mood to do some comparison shopping take a look at: http://www.whollygenes.com/html/compare.htm

It is a great one! I did a simple search on my surnames and got many hits. I heartily recommend visiting the "National Union Catalog of Manuscript >>Collections," also known as NUCMC, at: >><http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html> >> >> The print version, which we librarians call "nuck-muck," has been a >>reference standby for years. I didn't know it was available online, and >>boy, did I print out reams of records from it. >> >> So why should you be interested in NUCMC? First of all, let me explain >>what a "union catalog" is. A union catalog is what you call the result >>(whether in print, microform, or online) of recording and describing the >>holdings of multiple libraries, archives, or similar repositories. For >>example, I worked in a public library that had a county-wide union list of >>periodicals, which enabled us to refer patrons to another local institution >>(college, university, historical society, etc.) if our library happened not >>to subscribe to a certain periodical (magazine, journal, etc.) and someone >>else did. >> >> Now, most of you know that the colleges, universities, historical >>societies, archives, and libraries across this country have all sorts of >>one-of-a-kind items, usually from people, places, and things that aren't >>there anymore. People who are deceased, companies that are defunct, >>charities that folded, and so on. Items such as: >> >>* family bibles >>* family papers >>* business records >>* church records >>* charity records >>* ethnic organization records >>* arts & cultural organization records >>* photographs >>* political and advocacy organization records >>* maps, posters, charts >>* architectural plans >>* letters, correspondence, diaries >> >> What NUCMC did was survey these repositories large and small--across the >>entire US--and publish the results in many, many large volumes, which are >>still available in libraries. And now NUCMC is online, meaning that you can >>do a search on your family names, place names, and institutions connected >>with the people you are researching. You can search the companies they >>worked for, the clubs, societies, and fraternal organizations they belonged >>to, the churches they attended, and so on. >> >> Now, there's *never* any guarantee that the records you seek were given to >>a proper repository instead of going in the furnace or dumpster, or that an >>ancestor left important papers, but try a simple search on your (US) >>hometown and see if you were familiar with half of the stuff that turns up. >>Then try a search on "_______ family" (your surname). Those with Anglo >>names will probably have the most success. >> >> I did an easy word search on "Buffalo, New York" and got over 500 hits, >>several of which told me that some religious charities' records are now held >>by an archive elsewhere in the state; that the papers of a few prominent >>Buffalo citizens are likewise in out-of-town repositories. /////////////////////////////////////////// ---2138903871-1251336619-919702533=:1638--

    2. I note that John M (11th child of Jonathan and Rebecca Seaman) of Westfield township, Tioga County, PA served in the 207 regiment Penn volunteer infantry. My great grandfather, William Wesley Seaman (no connection to the Capt Jack line) also served in the 207 regiment and was also from Tioga County, PA. Can anyone provide me additional information regarding the 207th? I know very little about it other than John M. Seaman was at Bermuda Front, Fort Stedman, Hatcher Run, High Bridge and in front of Petersburg. Looking forward to hearing from any of you, Jan in Lake Forest, California

    1. [SEAMAN-L] Willet Seaman and Mary J. of Morris County, NJ
    2. Marilyn Steber
    3. It appears that the Morris County land record I ordered from SLC was not (as I'd hoped) a delayed one. It was land sold in 1857 by Willet Seaman and wife, Mary J. of New York City to Frederick A. Seaman, relationship not shown, of Chatham, Morris County, New Jersey. There were twelve lots and consideration was $1000. This comes from Book R6 page 374 of Morris County Deeds. The name of Willet Seaman who was married 7 Sept. 1808 to Mary Jenkins in Nantucket, Mass. was contributed to the records of the LDS church. Could that Willet be the same who deeded land to Fredrick almost 50 years later? The search for my Rev War Willets who was on the Tax Ratables of Morris County in 1784, '85 '86, '87 goes on. <Sigh> He had only a quarter section (160 acres) and little else he was taxed for. Cheap land in Northwest territory could've called him West. I figure he was born about 1748 since he had a son named David in 1768 in New Jersey. That would've put him in his 50s in 1800. But he isn't mentioned in Court Records of Monongalia, Va. nor on the AIS. Marilyn in San Diego. ---- 1999 resolutions: Find Willets Seaman, NJ line Rev. 3. Abraham ALLING, Blacksmith of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Oyster Bay by Barbara A. Barth Continued in the July 1998 issue of the Record (Vol. 123, Number 3): 2. THOMAS(2) ALLING (Abraham 1), blacksmith, born about 1670, probably at Marblehead, married Elizabeth Weekes, daughter of Thomas(2) (Francis 1) and Isabella (Harcourt) Weekes, before 25 September 1698 when her father deeded land in the town of Oyster Bay to his eldest daughter Elizabeth Alling and son-in-law Thomas Alling. [34] He is last seen in the Oyster Bay records 1 May 1716 when, as a blacksmith of Hempstead, he acknowledged a deed dated 16 February 1714/15, for land he sold to his brother Abraham. [35] This was the same land he had bought from his father 26 April 1698. [36] His earmark was recorded in Hempstead 9 March 1722/3; that of his son Thomas had been entered there 1 December 1722. [37] This is the last record found for Thomas (Sr.) The children of Thomas and Elizabeth (Weekes) Alling are given below as listed by George W. Cocks in his Alling manuscript. [38] All were probably born at Oyster Bay: i. Thomas(3), b. about 1699; will dated at Jerusalem, Hempstead, 21 Mar. 1776, proved 18 Mar. 1782. [39] He m. before 14 Nov. 1722 Elizabeth Seaman, dau. of Thomas and Mary (--) Seaman. [40] His will names his wife; children Freelove(4), wife of Amos Bedle, and Letitia, wife of Benjamin Seaman; granddaughter Jerusha Powell (of dau. Jerusha, deceased); and grandson Benjamin Laurence. ii. (?)Sarah, b. about 1702, d. 11 Nov. 1775; m. about 1723 John Seaman of Jerusalem, Hempstead, son of Thomas and Mary (--) Seaman, d. 11 May 1757. [41] His will, dated 5 May, proved 28 May 1757, mentions wife Sarah and children Elizabeth, Zebulon, Mary Smith, John, Thomas. [42] iii. Isabella, b. about 1705, m. 30 Oct. 1730 St. George's Church, Hempstead, [43] Samuel Seaman, son of Samuel and Phebe (Hicks) Seaman of Hempstead. His will, dated 11 May 1754 and proved 28 Oct. 1754, does not mention his wife, but names daughters Anne, Margaret, Isabel, and Millicent, all apparently unm. 3. I finally received my issue of the New York Gen. & Bio. Record. Included was an index from 1998. In the index it mentions 26 SEAMAN family members either on page 183 or in the footnote. I deduce that the article is named: "Abraham ALLING, Blacksmith of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Oyster Bay" and it is in three parts. It is the middle part [I suspect APRIL issue] that begins on page 183. I do not have access to that issue. Would somebody that does have access to that issue let us know what is on page 183 and the footnote to 183? Thank you! Jim Rubins

    1. [SEAMAN-L] Seaman-Venier House in Wantagh, Long Island, NY
    2. Jim Rubins
    3. There is a Town of Hempstead Historical Marker that talks about a Thomas Seaman: Seaman-Venier House Home of Thomas Seaman, who was instrumental in the 1891 change of name from Ridgewood to Wantagh. Wantagh was the Sachem of the Montauk Tribe. Circa 1860. Anyone know the street address where this sign is posted and the lineage of this Thomas Seaman? Jim Rubins Napa, CA
