    3. OK, I know you hate me by now but will someone please show me the error of my ways. See how this fits with what the rest of you already know. My James Grummon SEAMAN Sr was b abt 1801 in NY/NJ. James m Mary CRONK on 29 Jun 1822 in Bremen NJ - both are listed as from Jersey City. By the 1840 census, they had relocated to Wayne Co NY near the town of Savannah. In 1849 Rev Jim bought land in Barry Co MI & moved there. His son, Jim Jr., followed with his family to Barry Co abt 1862. James Sr had at least two brothers - Joshua & Stephan. Joshua was b abt 1789 & d Jul 1949. His wife was Susan M. ? and they lived in Jersey City bef moving to Warren Twp, Somerset Co, NJ. Stephen is supposedly quoted in a book titled "The First Presbyterian Church of Jersey City, NJ, Historical Discourses" by Charles K. Imbrie. John d abt 1832 and his wife was listed as Joanna. rom other sources, her name was Joanna GRUMMOND/GRUMMON. Also, there is a book I do not have access to but that could explain a lot to me. Pg 271 of The Seaman Family in America is suppose to have a letter from William Grant SEAMAN detailing this family. Can anyone help me out with this????? Terry === Terry Wilson 40 S. 2. I am very interested in connecting to someone, however, we have been unable to get our Sylvanus Seaman b. NY abt 1806 (we believe Herkimer Co, NY) out of Illinois. He lived in Carlinville, Macoupin Co, IL for many years. Married to Nancy McWain, dau of Louis McWain. We have information on his children born in Illinois, but nothing beyond that. Any help would be appreciated. Is there anyone near or in Fairfield, Herkimer Co, New York who could look up ANYTHING at the library, courthouse, cemetery there??? We need a lead bad. Thanks. Mary and my cousin Marilyn.

    1. [SEAMAN-L] Capt. John's English roots
    2. Carolyn Seaman
    3. Among some of the papers, etc., handed down in my husband's family are two typed manuscripts: 1. Seeger, Ferdinand. "Gengalogical and Historical Collectanea relating to the Old and Historic House of Seaman." New York, n.p. 1908. 2. Seeger, Ferdinand. "Makers of the Nation: Captain John Seaman as Statesman and one of the Founders of the Republic and Public Careers of some of his Descendants." New York, n.p. 1909. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information contained in them but at the time they were written they probably represented the accepted "truths." Nevertheless, they do present some clues as to the English origins of the Long Island Seamans. In the first article Seeger states: "The direct or main line migrated from its original Surrey and Sussex homes till finally we reach Leiscestershire and at the 16th. century we find it a leading family in the city of LEICESTER and in the County of this name. Another prominent branch is found in Oxford, and another in Essex County, in the latter county John Seaman, Gentleman, of Chelmsford in 1587 conveys to John his son and heir, certain lands. . . .JOHN SEAMAN of CHELMSFORD in May 1587 conveys to HIS SON and HEIR. . .JOHN SEAMAN then aged upwards of 40 years. . . who succeeded him. He held this manor and messuages, and divers lands with appertenances, and Bocking Park, and departing this life 29 June 1623, and was succeeded by his son JOHN SEAMAN Esquire, 20 years old, upon whose death without issue, this estate fell to HIS BROTHER SAMUEL SEAMAN Esquire. He died 27 Mch. 1632; leaving, by Anne his wife, RICHARD his SON and HEIR, then aged 7 years. He lived at Paimswick in Gloucestershire, and had for his wife Catherine, one of the daughters of Martin Wright of Oxford, Gentleman, one of the Aldermen of that city. He left his only daughter and HEIR CATHERINE, who brought his estate in marriage to John West, Gentleman, son and heir apparent to John West the elder of Hampton Poyle in the County of Oxford." [Seeger cites as his source page 408 of Volume II of Morants History of the County of Essex, England.] On the very last page of the second manuscript, Seeger presents the following ( I have tried to maintain Seeger's idiocyncratic capitalization): SUMMARY OF LINEAGE The VERY FIRST CENSUS of ENGLAND, the ANGLO SAXON CHRONICLES, compiled by order of ALFRED the GREAT (871-901) has the name of SEMAN in the list of leading families. JOHN SEMAN is in the list of holders of lands and manors in the reign of EDWARD the CONFESSOR (1041-1064). JOHN SEMAN next appears in the second historic census - DOMESDAY BOOK - and compiled by order of WILLIAM the CONQUEROR (1085-1086). From him descended the distinguished scholar JOHN SEAMAN L.L.D.&c., who died in Leiscester in 1550. He had among others JOHN, ALFRED and WILLIAM. From JOHN descended William, born in Leicester 1600 John, born in Leicester 1602 Caleb, born in Leicester 1603 Lawrence, born in Leicester 1605 (Vide Parish Register of St. Martins Church, Leicester) John and Caleb came to New England in the fleet with Winthrop in 1630. Caleb returned to England. John remained and is the CAPTAIN SEAMAN of LONG ISLAND FAME, and "who left such a host of descendants as to be remarkable from a genealogical standpoint" (vide N.Y. GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL), and consequently requiring separate tracing of each branch of line of these descendants. If you are interested in either or both of these papers, let me know. 3. I am very interested also but the problem is in proving that Captain John Seaman of Hempstead is any of the John Seamans listed in england and the son of anyone. since we don't have a birth date for Capt. John and some discussion about which Elizabeth is his wife the likelihood of establishing his parents is slim. I didn't count the John Seamans in the IGI that could be Capt. John but there were several and the IGI is not complete for the existing records much less the lost ones. If someone has the time to contact the submitters they may have found something unknown to us. I don't have time to contact the submitters or to try to find the records they may have used, place names are given for the English born Johns so it may be possible to check the records for those places and turn up something. It would be relay exciting to turn up records from across the pond! Richard Lyle Pettitt ABSea@aol.com wrote: > > I'm very much interested too, but more so in the U.S. line from 1800-1900. 3. I wonder if they are ethnic Dutch or German. Are there any Mennonites in your family background? In 1786, the Russian Empress Catherine II, looking for settlers to move into lands captured from the Turks, invited Mennonites living in West Prussia (now part of Poland) to settle in the Ukraine. Other dissatisfied farmers from central Europe were also invited. By 1870 there were about 45,000 Mennonites in Russia, with villages established in the Ukraine, the Crimea, the Caucasus, south central Asia and Siberia. By 1884, because of growing Russian intolerance, about 18,000 had resettled in North America. 1. [SEAMAN-L] Wilbert Seaman
    2. Marilyn Steber
    3. Terry: There simply was no "Wilbert". What there was was a mistake in an abstracted copy of the old Registry of Death record in Roane County, West Virginia. When dealing with abstracts, as you can see from the above e-mail, you can expect a little truth and a little human error. The point is that genealogists have to keep in mind is that filmed original records are more reliable than abstracts. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury in regard to the father of David Seaman of West Virginia. The rule of English Naming Patterns would suggest that David of WV would name one of his sons Willet after his own father and he did.
