It was compiled in 1913 from sources available to the author in the Virginia State Library. Researchers will find the name of soldier and the reference in the original work where the record was found. 3. I don't know how I missed this but GenealogyLibrary.com has the SEMANS family history on line! The Seamans Family in America Author: John Julian Lawton Call Number: CS71.S438 This is the family headed by Thomas SEAMANS [note the final "s"] of Swansea, Massachusetts. However, many of these SEAMANS deleted the final "s" and get intermingled with the Long Island SEAMAN family in upstate New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas. Sometimes it helps to find an unconnected SEAMAN in this book which makes you reasonably confident that it is NOT one of the Long Island SEAMAN family line. There is a charge for accessing the service provided by Family Tree Maker but I have found that my reduced costs for trips to the various genealogical libraries has more than made up for the $100 per year subscription fee!

    1. [SEAMAN-L] I have a picture of what "Cherrywood" the ancestral SEAMAN home looks like today...
    2. Jim Rubins, Napa, CA
    3. "Cherrywood" was the ancestral home of the family of Capt. John Seaman of Hempstead. This is at the site he called "Jerusalem" where he settled when he moved away from Hempstead proper. It looks a little different these days..... in fact, I am sure that Capt. John would turn over in his grave if he sees what has happened to his beloved farm. The picture I took is at the corner of Jerusalem Ave. and Wantagh Ave. in North Wantagh, NY. At least the name "Cherrywood" has been preserved as the name of the shopping center. You can see the name in the upright that is on the right hand side of the picture.... If you would like a copy of the picture send me an e-mail at: jmrubins@napanet.net

[c.1647] who delete the final "s" in their surname. Many of them migrated along the shore of the Long Island Sound westward from Swansea, MA and are found in Connecticut. They also mixed in with descendants of Capt. John Seaman [c.1609-1695] of Hempstead, Long Island, NY who migrated North into Westchester County, NY. The SEAMANS family of Mass. has been well documented in: Lawton, John Julian, The Seamans Family in America as descended from Thomas Seamans of Swansea, Massachusetts 1687, (Syracuse, NY: Privately Printed, 1933). I don't know of anybody that has put this information on a web site. "Alanzo" is a name that occurs in that family. There are SEAMAN - Dusenberry marriages in a Long Island SEAMAN family that migrated to New Jersey but I don't see any connection to the family you are searching for. 3. Found this article while looking for info on my great grandmother Sarah Seaman who married Joseph Milburn and moved to Mystic in Appanoose County. Would like to correspond with anyone interested in this family >From the Biographical and Genealogical History of Appanoose and Monrow Counties, Iowa Compiled under the Editorial Supervision of S.Thompson Lewis The Lewis Publishing Company 1903 "Solomon G. Hickman Solomon G. Hickman is one of the substantial farmers of Troy Township, Monroe County, Iowa, who have helped to bring the county into prominence as an agricultural section. Grandfather Soloman was a native of Scotland. The father, also named Solomon, was born in Fayetter county, Pennsylvania, was reared on a farm and married Elizabeth Cary, a daughter of a soldier of the war of 1812. They both died in Greene County of their native state, the former at the age of ninety-four, the latter aged eighty-three. Solomon, St., was a Democrat in politics and a Universalist in faith, while his wife was a Presbyterian. Seven children were born to them: Charles was a soldier and is now deceased; Stephen is deceased; Anna is deceased; Solomon G.; Archibald was a soldier and lives on the old farm in Pennsylvania; Abel lives in California; William is deceased. Solomon G. Hickman was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, near Waynesburg, November 30, 1840, was reared to manhood on the home farm, there imbibing many of the wholesome principles which were to guide him to his future. For some years he taught school in that part of Virginia which is now comprised in West Virginia, near Morgantown. This he continued til 1866, when he made his way to the west, settling in Monroe County, iowa. After remaining here a few years and taking a partner for life's journey, he went to what is now South Dakota and took a homestead in Clay County, where he remained four years. Returning to Iowa, he bought forty acres of hispresent fine farm of one hundred and ten acres from the man who had obtained it from the government. He has since added the balance. He has a well furnished house, a good orchard, large barn and feed lots, surrounded with beautiful shade trees, and the whole place evidencs thrift and prosperity. On September 5, 1869, Mr. Hickman married Miss Mary C. Seaman, a lady of much intelligence, who has proved an excellent companion to him; she was born, reared and educated in this county. Her father, Williiam R. Seaman, was one of the early settlers, coming to the state in 1845 from New York. His wife was Drusilla Ross, a native of Illinois, and they had five children: Minerva, deceased; Sarah Ann, Mary C., Eliza E. and Nelson J. The parents, who were farmers, members of the Methodist church and excellent people, are both deceased, the father at the age of sixty-five, the mother aged sixty. Mr. and Mrs. hickman became parents of seven children: Alice, the wife of G.G. Robinson, of Laurel, Iowa; Soloman, a medical student of the Keokuk Medical College; John who is one of the prominent teachers of the county, the principal of the public schools of Avery; Mack, also a medical student at Keokuk; Arthur, who is a mail carrier on route No. 5, rural free delivery, at Albia; Charles S. is a student in the junior class of the Albia high school, and Philip, who is fifteen years old. John, Mack and Solomon are all graduates of the Albia high school and were successful teachers. Mr. Hickman is a Prohibitionist in politics and a member of the Friends church, while the balance of the family belong to the United Brethern church. He has the reputation of being a reliable business man, is frank and genial and has many qualities which make him influenetial in the township."
