    1. [SEAMAN-L] Robert Livingston Seaman
    2. Marilyn Steber
    3. According to the book "Nellie Bly, Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist (1864-1922)" by Kroeger, Brooke. published in 1994, she married Robert Livingston Seaman in a May-December relationship. She was 31 (born 1864) and RL Seaman was 72. He died 1904. I don't have a birth date on him, but he was probably was born in the 1820s. He had family who weren't too happy about this adventurous lady marrying into the family. When he passed on, Nellie Bly became President of the Iron Clad Manufacturing Co. Nellie Bly was born Elizabeth Jane Cochran and she worked for various newspapers. One of her assignments for the New York World was to go AROUND THE WORLD IN 72 DAYS. She actually made it: "72 days, 11 minutes and 14 seconds". She beat the record of Phineas Fogg--the Jules Verne character in "Around the World in Eighty Days". My cousin, Dr. Harold F. Powell, Editor of Ancestry, the Quarterly Bulletin of the Palm Beach County, FL Genealogical Society was kind enough to send me a copy of his review of this book. Since I have a Nellie Bly and a Seaman in my family tree, I think it would be nice to know a bit more. Any information would be appreciated. Marilyn Steber in San Diego

    1. Re: [SEAMAN-L] Re: SEAMAN, Jane m. DENTON, Jonas
    2. Mike, You wrote-- << I have Jonas md. to Jane Hardenbrock March 22, 1710/11. Was Jane Seaman another wife or am I confused?>> The whole picture about Jonas' marriage(s) is confused. While the marriage of Jonas to Jane Hardenbrock is the only one documented, i.e., with a date, there are other references to wives, Jane SEAMAN and a Hannah ___?___ . The best presentation I have read regarding Jonas is Dr. Walter Krumm's series of articles on "Descendants of Rev. Richard DENTON" in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (beginning April 1989). (The Record). In his discussion (pp. 222-225) of Jonas he states that the mother of Jonas' children (b. 1710-c1722) was Hannah ____ . He also states that Jonas married after Hannah's death (after 1735) a Jane __?__ . who sued for separation in 1751-52. There is no mention of the 1710/11 marriage to Jane Hardenbrock which is most curious to me. What we may have is the 1710/11 marriage of a younger Jonas, as yet unidentified. We know that Jonas was b. c1677 and was single in 1698 at age 22. As you have shown, he was married in 1710/11 or when he was 34/35. It seems odd that Jonas would wait so late to marry and it suggests that this marriage was that of a different and younger Jonas DENTON. We know that Jonas' sister, Elizabeth DENTON, married Jonathan SEAMAN. It may be a misreading of the Jonas-Jonathan relationship which is that Jonas was a brother in law to Jonathan through Jonas' wife rather than through Jonathan's wife, Elizabeth. If so, then an erroneous assumption could be made that Jonas' wife, Jane, was Jane SEAMAN. In any event there are a number of facts in conflict. I would like to share views. Best regards, Hugh

    1. Re: [SEAMAN-L] Re: Jonas Denton and Jane Seaman
    2. Evylene and Jim, Saw Jim's comments on Evylene's email, subject above, about which I have a direct interest. My DENTON line includes Jonas DENTON who my records show married two Janes, one of whom could be Jane SEAMAN. or a Hannah and a Jane. Three versions are shown below. My records-- Jonas Denton, born about 1677, lived at Hempstead, N.Y., appears to be single in 1698 Census (listed with parents) bu married about that time or before to Jane Seaman, born about 1679, the daughter of Jonathan Seaman. Version #1 4. Jonas DENTON, b. 1677 Hempstead, NY m1. 1695 Jane SEAMAN ch-Mary Richard Samuel John Benjamin James m2. 1711 Jane HARDENBROCK ch- [a repeat of m1 except for Mary, Elizabeth and Richard] Samuel-r Elizabeth JOHN. b. 1713-r Benjamin-r James-r (-r = repeat from 1st marriage) Version #2 Jane SEAMAN and Jonas DENTON had the following children: +12 i. Mary DENTON. +13 ii. Robert DENTON. +14 iii. Samuel DENTON. 15 iv. John DENTON was born in 1700. +16 v. Joseph DENTON. +17 vi. William DENTON. Version #3 Jonas DENTON m1 bef 1820 Hannah ______ Children: John, Jr., b. 1713 Mary , Benjamin, abt 1717 Robert, Jonathan, James, Hannah, Samuel, Comment- Yes, it is a combination of records. Unfortunately the notes are not there on the web site with this record to indicate such. There is a lot of controversy among Denton researchers about whether there was one Jonas or two. Many believe there was one Jonas with two wives (Jane Seaman and Jane Hardenbrock). Some early researchers did not have Jane Hardenbrock at all! The notes indicate that this record is here for reference until descendants of this line come to a conclusion. Because Jonas/Jonah was a common name in the DENTON family, there is a possibility that we are discussing two different Jonas/Jonahs. My problem is that Jonas had a son, John who m. Sarah O'Dell, , but I am unable to determine by which wife. Further, whether the wife was Jane SEAMAN or not This is muddy water, but I hope that it focuses on the problem. Best regards, Hugh

Thanks, Evylene The reference to Jonas Denton is in the will of his brother, Samuel Denton dated March 7, 1712/13 which is in vol. 2 page 375 New York Abstracts of Wills, 1665-1801. I would have expected confirmation of the marriage of Jonas Denton and Jane Seaman to be in the records of the Hempstead Presbyterian church but I have not been able to find it.

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Maynard Seaman To: Jim Rubins Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 7:54 AM Subject: Capt. John Seaman descendents Dear Jim, Greetings from the Black Hills of South Dakota. We recently visited Swarthmore College Library near Philedelphia at the suggestion of the National Archives Lirbrary in Washington DC, and perused your book on "Decendents of Captain John Seaman of Hempstead, Long Island, New York" We were searching for reference to John M. Seaman, who was born about 1807 in New York and moved to Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and homesteaded beside George Cutshall and married George's daughter, Nancy Ann on March 3, 1842. John died November 3, 1877 in Meadville, PA but we have not been able to locate his burial site. His wife Nancy Ann moved with the children (9 of them) to Spink County, South Dakota, settled there and homesteaded in Harrison Township. We would like to know if John was a descendent of Captain John, but have not been able to make a definite connection. On the other side of George Cutshall in 1870 Census and 1865 homestead map, lived Sylvester H. Seaman, who married another daughter of George and Jane Sterling Cutshall, Mary Jane. The Cutshalls and Sylvester and his wife along with a Thomas Seaman and wife Delight are all buried in the Radle Cemetery a few miles north of Guys Mill, PA in Randolph Twp. We have not been! able to make a definite family relationship between Sylvester H. and John Seaman. The LDS files indicate that Thomas Seaman who married Delight is the father of Sylvester, and he is the son of Samuel Seaman and Mary Birdsall. We didn't, however, find this mirrored in your book. If you could shed any further light on any of these relationships we would indeed be grateful, Sincerely, Maynard Seaman great grandson of John M. Seaman
