New York City Methodist Marriages 1785-1893, Vol. 1 Index of Brides Compiled by William Scott Fisher 1994, Picton Press, Camden, ME In the early 1890's Rev. Samuel Seaman, a Methodist minister of New York City was asked by the NYG&BS to transcribe all the christening and marriage data he could locate from Methodist churches in NYC. Each entry includes the name of the Bride and the Groom plus the source and page number so that the original transcript number can be easily referred to. Microfilmed copies of all the NYG&BS transcripts are available through the LDS Family History Library. There are 6 microfilmed rolls: 17,777; 17,779-17,782; 17,785. Does anyone know how I could find out whether a land grant was given to a rev. war soldier from New Jersey? Seems like that would be in the NJ archives, but I got that question from them! Can anyone recommend a Title Company in Morris County, NJ? That might be the way to find Willets Seaman. Evidently he didn't leave a will in NJ. But he had a business in Morris County in 1780, you may recall that posting. Marilyn in San Diego ---- Happy Holidays! Researching: Sparks, Potter, Harden, Seaman, Tuphorn and Oppenborn.
In a message dated 98-12-29 03:28:47 EST, you write: << If you come across anything in this area, please let me know. >> Hey, Terry, haven't heard from you in a while. Good to know you are still out there. If anyone finds anything of Sylvanus Seaman of Fairfield, New York......I am still looking too. Thanks. One of these days I will get to Herkimer co, NY and sift through the stuff in the court house...if there is any. Mary
I was looking at the The Winthrop Society website at http://members.aol.com/WinthropSQ/society.htm and found a link to "The Residents of Salem The First Town of the Massachusetts Bay Commonwealth From Original Records up to the Year 1651" at http://members.aol.com/WinthropSQ/salem4.htm According to Jim Rubin's manuscript based on Mary Thomas Seaman's book, John Seaman "owned land in Salem, Mass. in 1643." I found two "Symonds" listed: Symonds, John . . . . freeman: p1637 1st Church: 1638 land: 1637 . Symonds, Mary . . . . . 1st Church: 1638 They are listed as owning land, but not as residents. I wonder if this John Symonds is our guy, and if so, I wonder who Mary Symonds is... Lindsey Ottman NYC, NY

Does anyone recognize this family? I found the information in the New England Historic Genealogical Society Register, Vol. 97, July 1943, pp. 290-291. David was born 15 Oct 1709 and his wife Mary, 7 Mar 1721. Both too young to marry by most peoples standards if the date were 1710. Of the 11 children in my Seaman file, David is the first born at 30 Aug 1739. A marriage date of abt 1710 would seem a bit soon to me. <G> Perhaps some of the Seaman experts can corroborate or refute this. Mike
The Frost Genealogy by Josephine Frost has been put on-line at genealogylibrary.com. This book was published in 1912 by Mrs. Frost who did a LOT of work with Quaker Records and was the author of the Underhill Genealogy so she became quite respected. She and Mary Thomas Seaman were probably aquainted as they both worked out of the Long Island Historical Society Library in Brooklyn in the 1920s. Anyway Josephine Frost has a marriage date that is later than any I have seen for: David Seaman, son of David and Temperance (Williams) Seaman, m. April 12, 1737, Mary Willetts, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Jackson) Willetts. They had twelve children ...... Does anybody have confirming information? Armbruster, Eugene L., Marriages of Long Island Settlers and Allied Families, (Jamaica, NY: Long Island Collection, The Queens Borough Public Library, 1941), vol 3., says the marriage was Abt. 1710. Bunker, Mary Powell, Long Island Genealogies, (Reprint. Originally published: Albany, NY: J. Munsell's Sons, 1895), 328 doesn't give a date.
Congratulations on finding the grave of Rebecca Seaman who mar. Samuel Jacobs! You say this is your "link" to the family... Hello Seaman family. I have finally found the graves of Rebecca Seaman b. 3 Feb 1746/47 and her husband, Samuel Jacobs b. 1743 with the help an internet friend and other genealogy friends. They were married in St. George Church Hempstead in 1771... My link into the "family". They are buried in Hillside Cemetery in Peekskill, NY. Near the border of St. Peter's Cemetery facing into Hillside Cem. The inscriptions on their graves are: In Memory of Rebecca Jacobs who departed this life Jan: 31 1814 aged 67 years 11 days In memory of Samuel Jacobs who departed this life December 31 1821 Their headstones are of red sandstone. His is partially buried in the ground, we had to dig it up. Hers is starting to wear away. We have taken photographs of their stones. After the holidays I will try to get their death certificates from the Town of Cortlandt. If anyone else is researching this part of the family.. please let me know!!! Happy Holidays everyone! Dear Seaman Group, I am a new member, who needs a lot of help! I am looking for the ancestors of my 5th Great-grandmother. The problems are: 1) Her first name was Ann. 2) Her last name was Seaman(s) I am quite sure that Ann (Anne) was a member of the large Seaman clan of Long Island, NY, though I have been unable to find her amongst the hundreds of Seaman descendants. I have only her marriage information to go on. On 10 Dec 1781, Ann Seaman married Ralph London (a Loyalist born about 1752 in Burlington County, New Jersey) in St. George's Episcopalian Church, Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. I know there are several genealogy books written about the NY Seamans, and I would welcome any information or suggestions on how to proceed. Thank you to all, and it's nice to meet you! Regards, Lisa Zajkowski
Palladium Software, a major sponsor of Roostweb, was recently bought out by another company. As a result they have dropped their sponsorship of Roostweb. To make ends meet at Rootsweb, Karen and Brian, the owners of Roostweb, have had to take out a large personal loan . If you have it in your heart and pocketbook, please consider becoming a member of Roostweb and support them monetarily. They have done an awful lot for us in providing our lists and space for our websites. To join Rootsweb please go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Thanks! I'm wondering if you are interpreting the second Memorandum correctly. You wrote: Richard Seaman Left Poughkeepsie . . . Or is this a typo and should read: Richard Seaman Left [for] Poughkeepsie. . . If what you wrote is correct, I am interpreting it that Richard died March 27 1767 in Poughkeepsie. Either way, I still don't know who he is. I do, however, have a Richard Seaman at Nine Partners in the right time frame. Married Anna Silvanus. Carolyn Mussina Seaman Kinderhook, NY <gregseaman@berk.com>
In notes by Nancy Milano that are on file at the New York Gen. & Bio. Society Library in New York City there is a recording of a book she purchased on auction of the Seaman Homestead at Hempstead, Long Island. [She doesn't state which Seaman homestead so we need to do more detective work....] In one of the books she purchased there is written on a back page: "Memorandum of the age of my Son Richard Seaman. He was borne the sixth day of November in the year of 1753. Memorandum that Richard Seaman Left Poughkeepsie the 1 Day of May in the year of our Lord 1767. Anno Domini (Day of our Lord) 1767 and March 27 in the Sovereign Lord George the third." In another book signed by Richard Seaman there is a note: "Richard Seaman is my name and he began to learn Latin this 20 Day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Sixty-three." Any ideas which Richard Seaman of Hempstead that moved to Poughkeepsie this may pertain to? Jim Rubins Napa, CA
