By T. R. Negus "In the fall of 1872 there was to be a full set of officers elected for Turner County. The first was a mass convention held in Swan lake, and almost every voter in Turner County was there. Father Turner was nominated for the legislature over W. W. Aurner; Vale P. Thielman, county clerk and Register of Deeds; J. W. Shellen, County Judge and Treasurer; and Arthur Slade for Sheriff. J. H. Shurtleff, James A. Childs, and a Mr. Hammond from near Centerville were named for County Commissioners." "The first 4th of July celebration was held in Swan Lake. J. J. McEntire was the speaker of the day. Major J. H. Shurtleff was Marshal. A few short speeches were made by others." As I recall, the name Shurtleff also comes up in Sotddard's History of Turner County. (See also Shurtliff) I find no information on Luther Adams. Larry Turner Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
