He came to America when he was 18 years ofd. making his home in Freeport, Illinois. He later moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, where he met and married Nora Swartz. They had four children, two boys and two girls. In 1914, they bought a cafe in Hurley and were in that business for twenty-two years. Heiko then operated a cream station until he retired. Heiko loved America and he loved Hurley! He was active in community affairs, serving on the School Boarrd and was town constable and was the Justice of the Peace. Two girls were born in Hurley and of the six children, three girls are still living. Their children were Lena (Mrs.Fay Bousefield); William, Ida Fay (Mrs. Ray Hannum) and Casper, all deceased. Lorayn (Mrs. Bert Chosvig), Florence (Mrs. Ernest Hauge), and Norma (Mrs. Lewis Hall) all graduated from HUrley High School. Lorayne lives in Colorado and Florence and Norma live in Wakonda, SD. From the Covered Wagon History Book of Hurley 1883-1893 The book was published by the Hurley Historical Society on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of Hurley in the year of 1983 by the Pine Hill Press of Freemen, SD.
