Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BhB.2ACI/169.1 Message Board Post: Soren P. and Katherine Simonsen Soren Simonsen was born at Vilsbak Farm, Brovst, Denmark on November 12, 1895. He was the second son of Peter and Pedra Simonsen, who farmed at Vilsbak. There were five sons and one daughter in their family. Because of poverty, he left home at the age of ten and began working as an errand boy on a large farm nearby. He also went to school and in 1915, at the age of 19, he bought a ticket to America. He had been told there were other Danish immigrants living in Viborg, so he chose to go there. On the train, he met Marius Petersen, who was coming to Irene. The first job Soren had was working for Alex Johansen. He later worked for Ole Flint and Martin (Mudden) Christensen. Soren's brother Lars also came to Viborg. In 1921, Soren went back to Denmark and married Marie Katherine Pedersen. She was born to Garva Peter and Marie Pedersen on May 15, 1895. Her father was a farmer and walking mailman at Tranum, Denmark. Katherine was working for a tailor shop. They were married on Marc! h 2, 1922 at the Tranum Church. They came to South Dakota and farmed in the Viborg area. In 1959, they made the journey back to Denmark by boat for a visit. In 1975 the [sic] retired from farming at the age of 80 and moved to town. They both entered the nursing home in 1986. Soren died January 14, 1987 and Katherine died June 23, 1987. They had one daughter, Ruth, married to Wayne Peterson, one granddaughter, Norma Jean, married to Gordon Knudson, and two great grandchildren, Ross Knudson and Holly Relf. Soren and Katherine were married 66 years. They were faithful members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Danish Brotherhood and Danish Sisterhood. -- Viborg South Dakota 1893-1993, The Viborg History Book Committee, pgs. 637-638. My mother works with Norma Jean ("Jeanie") Knudson. I will send you her contact information by e-mail.

Is the newspaper it would have appeared in a weekly so I could ask for an obituary lookup and have the person only have to look at 4 papers? What I need is the name of his wife who is related to California families I am researching. She is listed as "niece, Mrs. William Dale, of Sioux Falls SD." in an obituary dated 1934. Sioux Falls is in Minnehaha county but on the 1920 census William is still living with Elling and Inger Dale in Spink Twp, Union County. All clues will be happily received. 1. [SDTurner] German Newspaper 'Ostfriesische Nachrichten' - later 'Ostfriesen Zeitung'
    2. Boyken & Boyken Partners
    3. Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and the old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. We have the microfilms from Crest Information Technologies and Heritage Crest, both in Cedar Rapids, IA. Most of the single issues after 1916 are scattered all over the U.S. and Germany. We guess, maybe finding them in the attics, etc. of old East Frisian settlements in the States. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken Ostfriesland-Society of Iowa, Inc. frisian@netins.net

    1. [SDTurner] South Dakota Family Group Sheets
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BhB.2ACI/166 Message Board Post: I'm happy to announce the South Dakota Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/southdakota/ . I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have questions or problems, please let me know. The USFGS home page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) links to Family Group Sheet sites in all 50 states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to you are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in South Dakota, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY SOUTH DAKOTANS WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add other family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family on into Montana, Colorado, or Oregon, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as South Dakota. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. Please send in yours too. The more information we have, the more valuable the project will become. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox!
