    1. [SDTURNER] BENSON, Jay H.
    2. Nora Barr
    3. Am seeking information on Jay H, Benson born 1887 in Hurley, Turner County.  The only census record for him is 1900 in which he is a boarder aged 13 years with Fredrick and Louise Block. He is listed as born in South Dakota with both his parents having been born in Wisconsin.   With the loss of the 1890 Federal Census, I am unable to go back to determine the names of his parents. The 1880 census shows several Bensons living in Turner County. Following their family records forward from 1880, I cannot find a Jay H. as one of their children.   I can only assume that his parents died between 1887 and 1900. and he was taken in by the Block family. As Louise Block was born in Wisconsin and was 10 years older than Jay H., it is possible that she was his sister, but she is not shown on the 1880 census as Louise Benson in either South Dakota or Wisconsin.   Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Nora Barr Sparks, Nevada

I have a copy of the original names that homesteaded sections or quarter/half sections of Township 97N, Range 52W. I think this is Turner Township, only a part of the county. They have to be from approximately the 1870s, because several of the named individuals left before 1880. I can provide a .jpg copy if you email me directly at Citellus2@aol.com. There is a book of these township homestead plats at the Turner County clerk's office. I only took a picture of the relevant one for my fanily when I visited a few years ago.
