Author: lorijbk Surnames: Christensen, Jensen Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.turner/416.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Yes, I definitely think it's worth exploring the possibility. One of my problems has been is that I don't know much about the Christensen side of the family, and with it being such a common name in that area, plus the naming patterns in Denmark, it's been like looking for a needle in a haystack trying to find siblings and parents. Here's what I have, scant though it may be. Inger Marie CHRISTENSEN Born: 16 Feb. 1860, Denmark. Married: Andrew (Andreas) JENSEN in 1882. Andrew died in 1918. Married 2nd: Andrew M. Nelson (Nielson?) in 1929 in Sioux Falls. This marriage was apparently short-lived, as she is listed as Inger Jensen on her death certificate. Death: 1 Jan. 1944 in Viborg. Inger joined the Baptist Church at Saeby, Denmark in 1875, at age 15. It's possible her place of birth was Vendsyssel, Denmark. Children of Inger & Andrew Jensen: Lena, Hulda, George (died young), Lillian, Roy, Eleanora, Eva, Walter, Ida, George. Here are some notes I received from my uncle, some of which may have come from Inger's obituary. "Inger taught school for many years (I do not know when or where she taught). Her father, Ole Christensen, was a spinning wheel maker. She had two full brothers who lived at Irene, SD: P.C. [Peter Christian] Christensen and C.P. [Christian Peter] Christensen. She also had a half-brother and a half-sister. Inger Marie came to America at the age of 22. The family operated a general merchandise store which served the Viborg area. Andrew and Inger Jensen moved to Leader, MN in 1902, where they farmed until the death of Andrew in 1918. Inger then moved back to Viborg, where she lived until her death." See anything that may match up with your family? --Lori Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The names of her brothers and sisters were Selmer, Chris, Johanna Katrina (Katie), Antomine (Annie), Thora K, (Dora), and Greta Christensen. I am just getting started on a serious genealogy search, but I will try to help. She married Nels Larsen and they ended up in Yankton, SD. Note the difference in spelling. Being from Viborg,I suspect Mary was Danish, and may be and "en". There is a Chris J. Christensen buried in Viborg who was born in 1887 and died in 1918 that may have been her father. I don't know the relationship, if any to me, maybe a great great uncle. I don't know of any Widlons, but there have been Fantles in Sioux Falls, SD and maybe Yankton, SD. Neither were relatives as far as I know. Do you have birth or death dates on Mary or a middle name? Where did she live in later years? John Donaldson was known in the early Twentieth Century as the "Greatest Colored Pitcher In The World." We have been tracking his playing career for several years and more information is available at: www.johndonaldson.bravehost.com We are looking for a couple of very specific instances when Donaldson played in Turner county. We have a reference that mentions Donaldson playing in Centerville and Hurley, South Dakota. In May, 1916, while Donaldson was with the All Nations club a game was held in Centerville, South Dakota. We need to check local papers for results of this game. Later that season, in the month of June, 1916, the All Nations returned to Turner county this time to face the local Hurley sluggers. We are looking for local accounts of this game. Donaldson traveled throughout the Upper Midwest during his near 40 year playing career. Some say he would have been the best pitcher in the Major Leagues in his prime of 1910 to 1917. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in the Donaldson effort, we can send you some background on Donaldson's many exploits in other parts of South Dakota and the Midwest.
