Such as when it became a town, was it known for anything?, what was local business (farming, mining?), when did it die? (I have looked on LandSat pictures and only see one homestead left in that area now). Also, more than glad to hear from anyone who has knowledge of the history of the area.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wdB.2ACE/264 Message Board Post: Greetings, I have just learned that some distant relatives lived in Pennington County, SD. I am hoping that someone may be able to provide a lead to them. I am searching for Charles Richards and his sister Mrs. Clara Slater who lived in Scenic, SD, and their sister Mrs. Lydia Schneider of Rapid City. I do not know how long they lived in these places, but they were listed there in 1933 when their father died back in Iowa. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading this query. Gerald R.
Hello, one and all . . . I've just learned what most of you probably know by now. RootsWeb had some difficulties last night. Servers were down for about 12 hours starting about 3:30 am. The problems are fixed now but the nature of it caused all messages sent to a list during this outage to have been lost. So . . . If you sent a message to any list and have not seen it appear yet, you might want to repost it. Chances are your first attempt is out there somewhere in cyberspace where it shall remain for all eternity. --- Kathleen List Admin ~~~ Kathleen's Korner ~~~ [email protected]

Hello I'm trying to locate any information on-- and descendants of-- Seth GURDY who lived at Wall, SD around the turn of the century. He was born in IA, to Cyrus Gurdy (who was born in NH). Seth was raised in IA, served in the Civil War, moved to Wall, SD and died in Bell, CA I am compiling a book about him--he is a very, very distant relative, but I have 36 of his Civil War letters which I wish to compile into a book for regional history interest. I am also seeking a photograph of him. I'd deeply appreciate any additional information on him, and wish to locate descendants. Hello, Could SKS, do a obituary or cemetery look-up for me? I would so appreciate your help and time. The person, I'm looking for was Elina Olson or maybe Olsen, her DOB was 26 Jan 1869, her DOD, is Oct 1970, at Pennington County, SD. I obtained this off of the Social Security death index and it doesn't give the exact date of death. Thank-you, Clara Royer Scio, Oregon [email protected]

Janet Sprowls <[email protected]> wrote: >Does anyone on the list have a copy of "Rapid City Pioneers of the >Nineteenth Century" I wasn't aware of this book and am wondering if my GGgrandfather, George HUNT, appears in it. He came to Rapid City in 1877 and owned a ranch in Rapid Valley 3 miles from downtown. I went to the School of Mines (50 years ago), and it never occurred to me to investigate family history only a mile or so away! On a brief stop in Rapid last month, I tried to find where that ranch was located but didn't get all the info I needed. Can anyone give me Township and Section numbers for the Rapid Valley area? For instance, for the apparent Section with Patrick St on the north, Campbell St on the west, and Valley Dr on the east? Don Zimmerman
Thanks Stella for answering my request. Yes I would love to receive a copy of Story #41 from "Rapid City Pioneers". Please e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks again. Janet

I assume he was not employed by a company that offers sick leave benefits, but if so, they should continue his salary. Was he discharged from his job because of his surgery? If that were the case he might be eligible for unemployment compensation. Also, he might be eligible for Social Security Disability, but that is a lengthy process. I would suggest you call Church Response (605-342-5360) or South Dakota Advocacy Services (605-342-2575) or South Dakota University Affiliated Program in Sioux Falls (800-658-3080). If these can't help, perhaps they could direct you. Good luck! Stella
Does anyone on the list have a copy of "Rapid City Pioneers of the Nineteenth Century"? I need the author, publisher and page where George Washington Chitty appears in the book. Thanks for your assistance, Janet
On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went to Hanoi on a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI dog tags from US servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War. They were disgusted by the thought of this man profiting from the sale of > these tags. Upon returning to the U.S., they decided to go back to Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags. They did so, paying 19 cents per tag! They brought home several hundred tags. The plan is to return the tags to surviving family members, when they can find them. The process has already begun with one set being turned over to a grieving Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)! > > These two men have set up a website, > "http://www.founddogtags.com" listing the names of all those whose tags they purchased. > > If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one in Viet Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a name, there's an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help in their efforts to return the dogtag to its righttful survivor. I'm sure a family member would be eternally grateful to have such an important item returned. Please help by checking this website. And please send > the website address to everyone you know. The more people who see the lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those who lost loved ones in Viet Nam! Hello, I am passing this on from another list. Possibly some of you could benefit from this site. Best of luck. Nancy
