Curran who homesteaded in Wasta S.D. at age 28, in Wasta from at least April 27, 1913 through purchase in 1914. His neighbors and witnesses to the land purchase were Irvin L. Barnes, age 28, 1913, who lived in Wasta and went by George's place once or twice a month. George Wagner, age 35, was his nearest neighbor. Other witnesses were James Moran, and Theodore J. Ryan. The land was 160 acres within the Rapid City land district. An affidavit for George's identity was provided by his late father, Patrick H. Curran of Portsmouth, Iowa. The story goes that George was horribly gassed in World War I and died a short time later, leaving his son, Norman Curran, an orphan. He was sent to live with his grandmother in Spokane, WA until of age. I haven't been able to find any military, marriage, birth or other records to date to help locate George beyond 1914. Any lead even if quirky, appreciated.

Hello - My relatives James Lynch MYLES and his wife Nell lived in rapid City till about 1970. They left Scotland about 1923 to go to USA. I am hoping to find them on the 1930 census. They had no children. I found James on the Social Security Deaths Index. He died in 1973, his wife died earlier, about 1969. His residence at death was given as Newcastle, Weston, Wyoming but he was still in Rapid City 1969 when visited by a brother. He was born in Arbroath, Scotland on 23 Sep 1899. His Soundex number is M420. I would like to know his address there, and his occupation. I was told that he had artistic talent. Whether he followed that up in Rapid City, I don't know. Is there a street map of Rapid City available on Internet? Regards, Aileen in Australia.
I was born and raised in Rapid City, am currently residing in Montana, anyhow contact the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce and they may be able to help with a few things, like a map as well. There are several map sites on the internet. If I remember right try map.com or usamap.com. I still have friends and family in Rapid I will ask them if they know of anything. At one time, prior to 1970, I lived near Rapid City, So. Dak. I do not know the relative you are looking for but I do know that there are street maps on the internet. A search engine could take you to several map sites and you could go from there. Additionally, the newspaper: "Rapid City Daily Journal" might have some references to the Myles family. I hope you enjoy success in tracing your family. Dear Stella, Thank you again! I ordered one on interlibrary loan, can't remember which one right now. Good luck with your family searching! Sincerely, Katherine
I found both of these books on Albris. The one Hay Camp is pricey. Gateway to the hill is not bad for the price. They are both worth having. > Dear Stella, > > Thanks! There are several historical books about the Black Hills. Two dealing with Rapid City that I have are: "Gateway to the Hills; An Illustrated History of Rapid City" by David B. Miller (Northridge, CA: Windsor Publications Inc., 1985) " Black Hills Hay Camp" by David F. Strain" (Rapid City: Dakota West Books and Fenske Printing, 1989) Stella

In the list of cemeteries that I have for Pennington County there is an Old Iowa Settlement Cemetery in Underwood in Sec. 29. The first burial was in 1880 and it was abandoned in 1890. I don't see an Old Irish Settlement, but this might be the same one. Stella
