    1. [Penn'gtn] South Dakota Family Group Sheets
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wdB.2ACE/337 Message Board Post: I'm happy to announce a new Special Project, the South Dakota Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/southdakota/. I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The USFGS home page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) has links to the FGS sites in all fifty states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to you are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in South Dakota, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY SDers WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add more family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family on into Montana, Colorado, and Oregon, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as South Dakota. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. The more contributions we receive, the more valuable the project is going to be. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox! Greta Thompson

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WARD, LAPOINTE, SWAIM Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wdB.2ACE/335 Message Board Post: This lady probably is not connected to my WARD line. I am posting it as a courtesy to anyone interested. Rapid City:- Inez Mary WARD, 95, of Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, July 30, at the Sioux San Hospital in Rapid City. Inez was born on January 28, 1908, in Pine Ridge, SD, to W.H. SWAIM and Eva LAPOINTE. She was married to David WARD of Toppenish, WA. They had two sons, David C. WARD of Spokane, WA, and Milton James WARD of Toppenish, WA. Inez had a beautiful and interesting life. At the age of 5 in 1913 she accompanied her grandmother Jennie LaPointe, who was a member of the Wild Bill Hickok Indian Show and Circus, on a trip to Europe. The group was in Germany when the first World War was declared. She remembered a baby elephant that became her friend. Inez was educated in Indian boarding schools in South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. After graduating from the Haskell Institute, Lawrence, KS, she worked her way through 3 years of Nurse training at the St. Joseph Hospital, in Kansas City, MO. After finishing school, Inez worked for the BIA as a nurse in South Dakota, Orego! n, Arizona, New Mexico and Washington. She settled down in Toppenish, WA, where she lived and worked as a nurse at the Indian Clinic and at the community hospital. After leaving the BIA she worked for public health until her retirement. In 1991 she returned to Rapid City to live with her sister. Now she has gone to join her sister Lillian Wilson. Left to mourn her passing are her two sons, David WARD of Toppenish, WA, and Milton James WARD, one sister, Bernice BLANKENSHIP, of Rapid City, one niece, Mary Louise CAMPBELL, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. We all loved Inez for herself and for her unfailing cheerfulness and generosity. And we will miss her for the rest of our lives. A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2003, at Mountain View Cemetery with Fr. Chris Mananhan officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City." Published in the Rapid City Journal on 31 July 2003. ---end----

She is the daughter of William Walter and Minnie Louise (COLEMAN) WARD. Verna is the only of their 3 children who is still living. She says she was told that her father's mother, Elizabeth (Lizzie FIELDS) WARD was born (in 1872) to a native american mother and was adopted as a child. Elizabeth FIELDS was raised in Lawrence county, Ohio. Verna, now blind, vividly remembers seeing a photo of Lizzie as a child with her native american mother. Is it possible to find documentation of a native american adoption that took place in 1872? Please contact Mary K. Ward, 1432 Yeardley Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23225. Ph 804-232-9338. Thanks.
