Go to the LDS site, FamilySearch.org and check the 1880 Census, Etna, Hardin Co., IA: Martin, aged 70. The USGenWeb site for Hardin Co., IA, has a marriage, 11 Je. 1861, by J. B. WELLS, JP, for Samuel SHANER & Sarah MANLEY. They were still of Etna in 1880, and it appears that Sarah was probably a sister of John because the birth places match. Martin patented land in Jones Co., SD, which is west of Lyman. See BLMGLORecords, online.
