Renee, it may be helpful for anyone who is trying to help you to know that the SD death index shows the name as Johan HARNISH; it's possible that a death notice or obituary used this spelling, particularly if it appeared that way on the death certificate. Have you procured Johann's death certificate? It might indicate his place of birth.
