I have received a copy of the invitation the committee in Meraker now has sent out to about 200 families in USA and Canada based upon e-mail addresses collected. For those of you who may not have received any, it just means they haven't got your name on the list, yet. You may contact me off list with your postal address, or send a response to the address at the bottom of this info. Please spread the news! Here are the words: Welcome to Meraker, Norway People in the parish of Meraker are strongly preoccupied with the emigration to America which started in 1854 and continued till the beginning of the 20th century. Ever since stories have been told about relatives and tenant farmers of the valley, who left the hard labour at home with a dream of a better life in America. It is of great importance that this story is conveyed to the next generation, and by arranging this Emigration Jubilee we wish to focus on the history of the emigrants from Meraker. During the Emigrant Jubilee the culture and history of Meraker will be presented. A heartly welcome to our guests from America! HISTORY Meraker is one of the places in Scandinavia where iron first was produced. The oldest traces of ore extraction and the accompanying settlings are dated to 350 B.C. The local emigration to America started in 1854. Meraker is one of the municipalities that have sent most emigrants across the Atlantic relatively. Until 1870 we know that the majority of those leaving were families, later on the proportion of youths increased considerably. Do you need assistance in tracing your ancestral roots in Meraker? And I'm on the list from now on. It seems to me that very many in Minnehaha has Norwegian ancestors, and especially from Meraker. And that's were I come in. I was born there, and I almost live there, just a few miles away. I'm interested in genealogy and have several sources for looking up people for they who are wondering about their "old people". So, if you have any questions about Meraker and the people who lived there / are living there, just write me some lines, and I will try to help you. And my hope is that some of you listers might help me in my searching for my relatives in SD. I'll be back with more details about that later. Last years I have the pleasure to cooperate with Ardell an Don in genealogy. They are great! There is no doubt that through the past couple of years, I have learned more about "Hell" and the famous railway station there from Ragnar and Don. This is a wonderful opportunity for you out there to ask questions and to fill in the gaps. Also, through your church, school and general social groups, especially around Crooks, Baltic, Renner and all those beautiful areas--tell others to subscribe to this list. The most peaceful place in South Dakota is the Pioneer Cemetery, where many of these pioneers are buried. It is just east of I-29 and from West Nidaros, you can see the shadow of it up the hill. If you live in the Sioux Falls area, ask about the book in the local, maybe smaller bookstores. They may have done another publication.I got mine in Baltic, enroute to Watertown. Ardell Drube

After I had secured my copy, I informed those on the Tronder List of it's existence and in no time at all the remaining copies were gone. The last I heard, there may yet be another reprinting, but no date had been set if there is to be one. My understanding is that this book is available through interlibrary transfer. So, any of you wishing to read this book or to examine it for information on your ancestors, contact your local library to see if they can have it loan transferred for your use from the library in Sioux Falls and other sorrounding SD libraries. In the meantime, I am willing to do look ups for anyone who has ancestors listed in the book. My 94 year old cousin, of whom I just discovered less then a year ago, lives in Sioux Falls, SD, and has a copy of the very firs! t printing, which is written entirely in Norwegian.
Last month, we found the family of Sandy Galliher, whose family were most likely the Rogness/Sundem family of Rock County. Minnesota--your neighbor. It was solved over their query list and a lot of other individual research and lists, but almost. Much info is still on the Rock County Rootsweb List. Sandy's great grandmother was born in 1891 and adopted out after her mother died in her childbirth. Most of the families have left Rock County and suspect there are some in Minnehaha County. The entire research was fascinating and almost complete for a Christmas Gift 2003 to Sandy. They need a family reunion, and I would come! Ardell Sortomme Drube of Colorado
Donald Nelson really knows more about Norwegians in Minnehaha County, and his roots are deeper. However, I have photographs for almost every tombstone in the Nidaros Churh Cemeteries. Don cannot make that claim! Seriously, Don will help me keep track of the messages concerning the descendants of Norwegian immigrants that you find and send over this list. Don does not know that yet, but I think after this message, he has the hint. Wade Anderson of Kansas studies the book daily. He is trying to find descendants of Peder Haugmoe (Hogmoe/Hogmo) and Anna Moen. Peder and Anne were probably born about 1890- 1900 in Sverdrup Township. Alice was confirmed in 1914 at East Nidaros in Baltic. Are there any descendants surname of Haugen that changed the surname from Medhaug/Mehaug? Glad you are here, Don-- Ardell Drube
I'm a descendant of the Norwegian Pioneers of Minnehaha County who had come from Meraker in Nord-Tronderlag, Norway. In fact, my ancestors were the very first ones to migrate from Meraker to America in 1854. One of my ancestors was the very first ever to file for a homestead in the Mapleton township of Minnehaha County in 1866. I believe you've heard this information before, haven't you? Yes, if you guess I am Donald Nelson, you're correct. Hei Ardell.................. Donald

All of your information will be forwarded. To see what it is all about, here is a web site. Your continued output maybe very useful. We have several on the Tronder-L Rootsweb from that area or have an avid interest in genealogy there. The History Book on Norwegian Pioneers is one of the most used books at this time on the list. It may fade, but our TreLag/Tronder Stevne or Convention in Sioux Falls during August and the Tour to the Nidaros Churches certainly stirred an interest! http://www.meraker.kommune.no/utvandrerjubileum/index_engl.shtml Ardell Sortomme Drube

Hello. I`m searching for any descendants of Louisa Larsdatter Mosveen ,born 1879 in Norway. She was married to Charles Larson ,born in Denmark abt 1882. In 1920 they lived at 918 West 6th St. ,Sioux Falls ,SD ,and in 1930 Louisa/Louise can be found at 1420 West 10th Str ,Sioux Falls ,SD. In 1930 the head of household is "L. Larson, aged 38". This must be wrong. They had 3 children: 1 LaVerne Larson ,born Minnesota (??) ca 1910 , 2 Raymond Larson ,born SD ca 1912 3 Arlee/Allie Larson ,born SD ca 1915. I can find at SSDI one Raymond T. Larson ,born 22 Jan 1912 ,died in Alameda ,CA 13 Jul 1974. He is issued in South Dakota ,and could be Louisa`s son. Does anyone know this family?? Erik in Norway
