I am not sure if they have copies. I do know they have microfilm copies at the SD State Historical Society at 900 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501-2217. Phone 605 773-3458. It would cost you approximately $10.00 for a single search. I could look in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, sometimes there were some mention of a death in the surrounding areas. The Sioux Valley Genealogical Society has a book of cemetery records for the surrounding area in Minnehaha County which is where Dell Rapids is located. Also you can check Dell Rapids' web site to get cemetery records at www.dellrapids.org to see what you can find. Donna at [email protected]

1. Re: [SDMinnehaha] newspaper near Dell rapids
2. Hello Mike, You may not be able to find a newspaper obit for the deceased you seek, because not much was saved from early news publications. I have located the following which may or may not be of help to you. Dell Rapids had the following newspapers: Dell Rapids Times Historical Info: Merged with The Dell Rapids Tribune, to form Dell Rapids Times-Tribune. Issues published 7/2-7/5/1895 published as The Dell Rapids Daily Times. Missing Issue List: Any issues published before 1/1/1886. 1892: 12/30. 1893-1899. 1900:1/5, 3/16. 1904: 1/1-4/8. Dell Rapids Tribune Historical Info: Merged with Dell Rapids Times, to form Dell Rapids Times-Tribune. Missing Issue List: All issues published before 11/5/1892 and after 9/26/1896. Begin End Roll # 11/05/1892 09/26/1896 439 Dell Rapids Times-Tribune Historical Info: Formed by the union of The Dell Rapids Tribune, and Dell Rapids Times. Continued by The Dell Rapids Tribune (1920). Their issues ran from 1908 to 1920 Dell Rapids Tribune (1920) Historical Info: Continues Dell Rapids Times-Tribune. Missing Issue List: 1981: 4/22-12/30. Baltic, which isn't far from Dell Rapids, also had a newspaper named Minnehaha, but it was rather short lived and very few issues have ever been recovered. I believe it may have been printed in Dell Rapids, then distributed in Baltic. Minnehaha Missing Issue List: Any issues published before 10/11/1907. Any issues published after 04/17/1908. All Sioux Falls newspapers history and publications can be found at the following site: http://www.sdhistory.org/arc/newspaper/default.asp?EID=1&RID=1 If by chance, the deceased had friends or relatives in Sioux Falls, they may have had an obit put in the local paper. Even though Dell Rapids is roughly 30 miles north of Sioux Falls, it's highly possible that the news of the death never traveled that distance back in 1905. The first of my ancestors came to the Renner & Dell Rapids areas in 1866 & 1867. My great great uncle Jonas (went by John) Nelson was the very first to file for a homestead in the Mapleton Township in 1866. He, his family and his best friend John Thompson and wife came to this area in 1866 from Goodhue County, Minnesota. If the deceased you seek was Norwegian, you may also want to contact the following person: Mari Platt "Bygdeboker for Meråker" and a new book just out about the immigrants from Folldal to the United States, "Utvandrerhistorie for Folldal" by Vidar Støen. I also have "Ætteosge for Gudbrandsdalen," 1953. Some local South Dakota County books: Pennington County, Minnehaha County, Northern Custer County, the reconstructed 1890 census for Pennington County, Behrens Mortuary Records in Pennington County, cemetery records for Minnehaha County, and I have access to South Dakota census tapes. There are other county books in our local and university libraries as well. I even do cemeteries. Sincerely, Donald Nelson

3. Hello, everyone I was wondering if someone out there would be able to point me in the right direction for information about my grandfather. I have had a lot of luck tracing his adopted family, but very little with his birth ancestry. His birth name is Rudolph THORSON, born September 5, 1903. He was surrendered to the Minnehaha court on Sept. 21, 1904. All I know about his birth parents is that they were both Norwegian and the mother was living at the time he was surrendered to the court. There is a story that she worked at the South Dakota Children's Home in Sioux Falls until she died. I understand that South Dakota has a 100-year privacy law pertaining to court records. How do I go about asking for the court records when the 100 years are up and is there any other tip anyone could give me. I haven't had luck getting his birth record because I don't know his mother's maiden name. Thank you in advance to anyone who may be able to give a few tips. Kim McGuigan
