You are probably thinking of a two volume set of books put out by the Jackson-Washabaugh County Historical Society. I don't think they are being published anymore (vol. 1 was published in 1965, vol. 2 in 1989), but you can find them at the library in Kadoka, SD. The books run about $60 each if there are any left. I have the books and absolutely love them, but then I grew up there and know most of the families.
