Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/idB.2ACE/5.1.1 Message Board Post: I have since learned that Terry (known by all as "Ted") ranched in the Cottonwood area first, then moved to the Interior area for the last 23 years of his life, dying in 1959. He worked on the Louis Hercher ranch, also running his own cattle and horses there. None of the names you've mentioned seem familiar, but I will definitely check to see if they were cousins. Thanks much.

Another possibility is that your Terry leased from family. Either by the 1820 Cash Entry Law or the Homestead Act, there were lands patented in adjoining Pennington Co. or in Jackson Co. by Dora, George Fredk., Pleasant, Robert M., & Wm. S. STEPHENSON. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Dickson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/idB.2ACE/7 Message Board Post: Hello, I hope that someone can help me. I live in Washington, DC and will be visiting Rapid City and Cottonwood July 14-17 to do family history research. I have only been researching since February and have been limited to DC area resources such as the National Archives (census, city directories and land grant records). Therefore I am a novice when it comes to geneaology. My great-great-grandfather Charles H. Dickson owned land in Cottonwood from 1908 to 1911(?)when he was Supervisor of Indian Schools (for the Indian Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of the Interior). His son Ernest Dickson also worked for the same agency and owned land adjacent to his father's; he married a woman from South Dakota and they are listed in the 1910 Census. My grandfather (also named Charles H. Dickson) was born in Rapid City, SD in 1911. Does anyone have any advice for me for when I arrive in South Dakota regarding: a) finding the land in Cottonwood that they owned, according to the coordinates on the homestead applications; b) accessing birth/marriage/death records for the area; and c) whether there is a library which holds old copies of the "Cottonwood Republican" which seems to have been the newspaper of the time? Thanks much in advance.

You might want to check with the Bennet County library and see if the families you are researching are in their history book.

You are probably thinking of a two volume set of books put out by the Jackson-Washabaugh County Historical Society. I don't think they are being published anymore (vol. 1 was published in 1965, vol. 2 in 1989), but you can find them at the library in Kadoka, SD. The books run about $60 each if there are any left. I have the books and absolutely love them, but then I grew up there and know most of the families. The only problem with using the books is that there is no index, so you have to go page by page to find the information you want. You can e-mail me: [email protected]
