Author: billydolly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/114/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is from my grandmother's scrapbook. Beside it, my grandmother has written: "Among my mother's many talents, she like to write poems. She did this for a joke and had it put in the paper and it kept the 'gals' in the sewing circle guessing for some time as to who had written it." I can say that "Sadie" is Sadie (Kinsey) Herbert, and "Jessie" is Jessie (Brown) Herbert. These two ladies were both married to brothers of the author. THE MOUNTAIN VIEW SEWING CIRCLE (by one of them) The ladies meet in two weeks, To eat and chat and work, First, Vina had them at her house, They're not the kind who shirk. Then Alice asked them over there, They came with right good cheer To help make rugs and candy sacks For Christmas was so near. Next, up to Sadie's house they go, For it would never do To stay away from there, you know, When dinner's on to brew. When Pearl says, "Here, it's my turn, now." No matter what the weather, They answer with a lusty shout, "We'll all go up together." And Lucy is the next in line To entertain the bunch. They'll all turn in and work just fine (Now that is just my hunch). Now Gladys, with her house all neat, And children off to school, Will find them something nice to do, 'Tis not against the rule. On down the road, a little way. Is Sylvia, full of glee, With quilts to make and socks to darn, They'll surely busy be. And next is Ethel, o'er the hill, To greet them at the door, Then time will fly most cheerfully, Until it's half past four. And last of all our Jessie friend Will meet these ladies true, They all will work until they see There's no more work to do. Then all will scatter to their homes Before it is too late And put their needles all away For nineteen twenty-eight. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
