    3. Posted on: Custer Co. SD Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SD/CusterObits?read=9 Surname: Swint ------------------------- (Chris Swint was a long time resident of Custer County who passed away in Missouri. This obit was cut from a St. Joseph, MO newspaper and given to his family) INDIAN FIGHTER DIES IN MISSOURI Brother of St. Joseph Doctor Fails to Recover from Stroke of Paralysis Served as Scout in Many Battles in Frontier Days Christian P. Swint, eighty-one years old, veteran plainsman, gold prospector and Indian fighter, died at 10:15 o'clock last night, August 31, at a St. Joseph hospital, after an illness of two years. The aged man suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago at his ranch near Bakerville, S. D., and was brought to St. Joseph to be under the care of his brother, Dr. William Swint. Mr. Swint was a native of Pennsylvania, and came west with his parents in 1860. When he was sixteen years old he made his first trip west into the western country, and later became the leader of an ox train. In 1865 he returned to Nebraska and on his second trip into the the western country was accompanied by his brother, Dr. Swint. The travelled to the foothills and worked as cowboys at different ranches and returned to their home in Nebraska in 1867. Christian Swint again returned to the west, and for many years was known as one of the most courageous Indian fighters, lone gold prospector and plainsman. He became well acquainted with Indian tribes throughout the country and knew their habits and customs, which brought him the position of an Indian scout during the Indian wars. In Custer's last fight at the battle of Little Big Horn he was a scout under General Reno. His daring invasions into Indian territory, clashes with Indian outposts, and ability to find the hiding places of the red men became known to Chief Red Cloud of the Sioux, who offered a special reward to the brave who should bring in the scout's scalp. In an encounter with Indians the scout lost a front tooth and the Indians named him Eagle Lost Tooth. For more than twenty years the Indians hoped to find the scout with the lost tooth among their dead enemies but Swint always came out victorious, although he was wounded in a battle. After peace had been restored with the red men, Swint often visited the Indian tribes and was always welcome and received many courtesies. Stories of his deeds were known to different chiefs, and his visits were always days for the occasion of special ceremonies. During his wanderings in the Black Hills, Swint found gold near Custer, S. D., and at one time had valuable holdings and shares in mining companies. For many years members of his family had not heard of his whereabouts and at one time it was thought that he might have been killed by the Indians, but he had lived the life of a plainsman and rancher in the Black Hills for nine years, during which time he had been unable to communicate with his relatives. He was a friend of Buffalo Bill, whom he often visited. The scout spent his last years on a ranch in the game park reserve in the Black Hills, near where President Coolidge spent his summer vacation. He was single and is survived by three brothers, Doctor Swint, of St. Joseph; and Jacob and Frederick Swint, of Washington, and Roscoe Swint, of Bakerville, S. D., an adopted son.

    3. I have a picture of my g-fathers (Floyd Spencer Wilson) baseball team that is probably around 1910. They are all wearing shirts with Custer printed in large letters across the front. He married my g-mother, Fern May Witzel, in 1910 in Custer and came to Sheridan, MI by the time of birth of first child, Earl Wilson, May 1912. Also pictured on the team is Fern's brother Lloyd Witzel who was from Michigan. My grandfather was from the Kankakee, IL area and I don't know how they ended up playing ball in S. Dakota. Eight other men are in the picture but no names. Anyone with knowledge of local baseball? Pat Wilson Scott Was there a lot of interest in local baseball at that time?
