Give me a day or so and maybe I can come up with that info for you. I'm sure there must be pictures somewhere. It was quite a facility in it's day. Since fresh air and sunshine were the main healers of TB, the patient's rooms all opened onto porches with chairs and rockers where they could sit and take in the sunshine and fresh air. They had a farming facility where they raised their own vegetables and even had a herd of milk cows to provide their milk and butter. I worked at the facility two summers while I was in high school back in the '50's. By then, medicines had been developed to treat TB (there was no cure) so the patients were more in a hospital environment. I worked in the kitchen as a helper and occasionally got to help deliver meals up on the floors. I loved that because I got to meet the patients and find! a bit about them. I would be willing to work with you and see what remains there - much has changed. E-mail me personally and we can visit. Ginger vlnelson@rap.midco.net

Then it was a hospital for the severely retarded before it was turned into a home for troubled boys. It is located about 5 miles outside Custer. I do not know for certain but would guess that the records for the TB patients are probably still located in the basement.

My great grandfather was killed in Pleasant Valley, Custer, South Dakota in May, 1876, when he and a group of men were jumped by Indians. John Hunter, better known as Pony Hunter, was the first man killed and buried there. Supposedly there are accounts of this battle - Battle for Spring on the Hill - "Black Hills Trails". I am interested in knowing what happened to my John's body. Is he still buried there somewhere, or was he buried in a local cemetery? I am also interested in knowing what happened to a man named Coyer who was also a member of this party. He was shot, but died in Custer a couple of days later. I woud appreciate any information on either of these two men. Carol
