    1. [SDCUSTER] Pauline Parker Wood
    2. Eric Little
    3. Good morning List, A couple of days ago, the following submission was gatewayed onto the Kings County, NS list... "I am descended from Ephraim Wood through his son William (b. 1787) and his grandson Laurence (b. 25 Oct., 1815). Laurence was the oldest of William and his wife Margaret Butler's children. Laurence married Pauline Parker (b. 2 June 1816 and d. 12 March 1902 in Pringle, South Dakota, USA) and they had 7 children." We can see Pauline Wood in the 1900 census residing in Custer with her daughter, Bertha. Since records only began to be kept officially in 1905, we are out of luck for Pauline's parents... officially. Is there another way to discover Pauline's mom and dad Parker?? Thank you. Eric

Author: Brigid272 Surnames: Classification: will Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/104/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can anyone tell me how to get a will in South Dakota? I made a brief inquiry in a phone call about something else at the clerk's office in Pennington County and the woman on the phone said only people named in the will could get a copy of it. That sounds loopy to me, as the will I was seeking in that county would have been from 1881 for my g-g-grandfather! I am now looking for a will in Custer County from 1925. I haven't called the clerk's office yet, but does anyone know if I'll get the same runaround? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Eellitta Surnames: Moore, Rhodes, Reed Classification: immigration Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/102/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Liberty Tribune Liberty, Clay Co., Missouri June 20, 1879 Emigrant Family Drowned - Deadwood, D.T. June 14 At Buffalo Gap Thursday night, by a sudden rise and overflow of Beaver Creek, caused by a water-spout, eleven persons were drowned whose names are as follows: Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Rhodes, Oliver Rhodes, Frank Reed, Clyde Rhodes, Cliff Rhodes, Maud Rhodes. The latter three were children. All were emigrants on their way to the Hills from Mills county, Iowa and four men who were going from the Hills to the railroad, whose names are unknown, met with a similar fate. Two of them were team owners and one a passenger and night-herder. In about five minutes the whole neighborhood of the creek was flooded, and the waters subsided as rapidly as they rose. I was researching a Missouri newspaper when I came across this article. Eellitta Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: gingernelson40 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/40.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here's what I have found out so far. The present name of the facility is Star Academy - it houses delinquent boys and girls from SD. I placed a call to their Operations Director, but she has yet to return my call. Secondly, I called the SD State Archives in Pierre, SD (605-773-3804). A nice gentleman there says they should have records from the facility that are over 50 years old and that these records can be researched - cost, $21.50/hr, or for the cost of copies if you do the research yourself at their building in Pierre. He says the SD Dept. of Corrections or SD Human Resources probably has any records newer than 50 years but those would no be researchable anyway. He also looked up and there was a newsletter published by the patients of Sanator called 'Sankota'. His records show the SD State Archives has the only copy of these - there are 23 volumes. I will call the Custer Library today and see if they have anything - they are closed on Wednesdays!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: gingernelson40 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/40.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I know a little bit about Sanator. When I was in high school I worked in the kitchen there - not 1919 !! but in the late '50's. I live in Rapid City, not too far away. Let me make a phone call or two and see what I can find out about old records. I do know that, at one time, Sanator was almost like a little city. It sits in a beautiful part of the Black Hills surrounded by pine trees, granite rocks and green meadows. They ran a dairy, had gardens. Patients who went there usually were there for years since there was no "cure" for tuberculosis. It was believed that the fresh air, peaceful atmosphere, good food and rest they got there was beneficial to healing. There were dormitories with verandas where the patients could sit out in the fresh air. By the time I was working there TB was on the way to being almost a thing of the past. There were medicines to help fight the disease and many patients were able to leave after a period of treatment - some however, with advanced cases of tuberculosis stayed until they died. Today the facility is a prison for delinquent boy called Star Academy. For a period of time Sanator was used to house South Dakota's severly mentally retarded.
