Author: billydolly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/114/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is from my grandmother's scrapbook. Beside it, my grandmother has written: "Among my mother's many talents, she like to write poems. She did this for a joke and had it put in the paper and it kept the 'gals' in the sewing circle guessing for some time as to who had written it." I can say that "Sadie" is Sadie (Kinsey) Herbert, and "Jessie" is Jessie (Brown) Herbert. These two ladies were both married to brothers of the author. THE MOUNTAIN VIEW SEWING CIRCLE (by one of them) The ladies meet in two weeks, To eat and chat and work, First, Vina had them at her house, They're not the kind who shirk. Then Alice asked them over there, They came with right good cheer To help make rugs and candy sacks For Christmas was so near. Next, up to Sadie's house they go, For it would never do To stay away from there, you know, When dinner's on to brew. When Pearl says, "Here, it's my turn, now." No matter what the weather, They answer with a lusty shout, "We'll all go up together." And Lucy is the next in line To entertain the bunch. They'll all turn in and work just fine (Now that is just my hunch). Now Gladys, with her house all neat, And children off to school, Will find them something nice to do, 'Tis not against the rule. On down the road, a little way. Is Sylvia, full of glee, With quilts to make and socks to darn, They'll surely busy be. And next is Ethel, o'er the hill, To greet them at the door, Then time will fly most cheerfully, Until it's half past four. And last of all our Jessie friend Will meet these ladies true, They all will work until they see There's no more work to do. Then all will scatter to their homes Before it is too late And put their needles all away For nineteen twenty-eight. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: billydolly Surnames: KINSEY, HERBERT, DREW BOWER, DORAN, WOOD, DURST, HARKNESS Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/113/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is a newspaper clipping in my grandmother's scrapbook. Sadie was my grandmother's aunt by marriage. I know that Sadie was born on Dec 4, 1889 so this would have been published in around 1965, but no date or place of publication is given. SADIE HERBERT TELLS OF COLD SPRING SCHOOL (In conjunction with news story on the restoration of the Cold Spring school, the following story of life in a county school seems especially appropriate as students resume their school year in our modern well equipped and evenly heated buildings. It was vastly different some 70 years ago.) Mrs. Sadie Herbert recalled her school days when she attended the first country school opened, the Glen Erin school built in 1879. The Cold Spring school was the second one opened in Custer County. MRS. HERBERT'S RECOLLECTION I was born in a little log cabin near Buffalo Gap 76 years ago and have lived all my life in Custer county so I guess I am an old timer. My parents moved to what is known as the Kinsey ranch five miles from Custer when I was seven years old. I attended the Glen Erin school which was built about 1879 and is the first school built in Custer county. From our home it was a distance of one mile which we walked in all kind of weather, sometimes 30 degrees below zero and with eight or ten inches of snow on the ground, and we didn't have the kind of footwear the kids have nowadays, either! My first teacher was Maud Drew (I believe she taught in Cold Spring school many years ago). I got all of my schooling in the little Glen Erin school house. Maud Drew drove from Custer in a one horse buggy. I also went to school to the Bower girls, Roxie and Erva, who walked to the school from what is now known as the Conner ranch near Stockade Lake. In those days the teacher was also the janitor whose duty it was to arrive about 8:30 and get the fire started in the box wood stove for which there always seemed to be plenty of good pitch wood. She also swept the floor and outlined the day's work on the the black board. The student who sat next to the red hot stove roasted while the one who sat next to the wall in the double, homemade seats, froze. Those desks were made of one inch lumber and painted brown. They were heavy but strong and fairly comfortable, we thought. It was pretty cold in the little one room log school house on a winter morning. We had bottles of ink which often froze and burst. We used slates and a slate pencil about six inches long and the size of a ten penny nail. The slate pencils broke very easily. We washed our slates off with a piece of cloth and water which often froze as we tried to clean them. We carried our lunch in a five pound lard pail which we placed on an extra desk in the back of the room or on the window sill where it sometimes froze! The kids took turns carrying drinking water in a pail from the Walsh spring about one mile away. At first the school term was four months, later raised to six months, for which the teacher received $30.00 per month and paid $10 for room and board. We worked our arithmetic problems on the blackboard, also diagrammed sentences and wrote our spelling. There were seldom books for each so two of us had to study from the same book -- that didn't work too well. Some of my later teachers were Ella Doran, Effie Wood and Mrs. Scott Durst, nee Alta Harkness. Sometimes there were more than 20 children in grades from 1 to 8 going to school in the little log school house, which is still standing but falling to pieces very fast now. This would seem pretty tough to the students of today but we DID learn, and after all, those were the good old days! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: billydolly Surnames: KINSEY, HERBERT, BAKER, SCOFIELD, STANHOPE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southdakota.counties.custer/110/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This obit is from my grandmother's scrapbook and no information is given as to when or where it was published. My connection is to the Herberts married into this family. JAMES KINSEY James Kinsey, the eldest son of Daniel and Esther Kinsey, was born at Walker, Ind., October 22, 1865, and died at Hot Springs, S.D., July 26, 1928. When a small child he came with his parents to Nebraska, where his early life was spent. In 1886 he came to the Black Hills and settled in Custer County where he had resided since. He was married to Elsie Jewett on July 25, 1888, and to this union four daughters were born, all of whom have homes in this vicinity. He was again married in March 1919, to Margaret Mathews. He is survived by his aged mother, his wife and four daughters, one brother and three sisters. Mr. Kinsey resided on a spendid farm a few miles east of Custer. In addition to his farm work he had devoted, for the past thirty years or more, a few months each year to the work of shearing sheep in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. His unusual skill in this work had made him an annual welcome guest at numerous homes throughout the territory. He was a quiet, unassuming man who made friends without effort. The splendid ovation given at his funeral, Sunday afternoon, at the Community Church, and the large concourse of people that followed his body to it's final resting place at the little Cold Springs Cemetery, are evidences of the wide friendship which was his. CARD OF THANKS We take this means of thanking our friends and neighbors for their help and kindness in our recent bereavement in the loss of our father, James Kinsey, and for the beautiful floral offerings. We also wish to thank the choir for their service. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Herbert Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Baker Mr. and Mrs. Vet Scofield Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Stanhope Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.

The most interesting thing I found was an obituary for Robert online at Ancestry. He died in 2004 in Montana at the age of 90. Here is just a bit of the obituary published 14 Jan 2004 in the Billings Gazette: Robert L. 'Bob' Engstrom Tuesday, January 13, 2004 SUNDANCE - Funeral services for Sundance resident Robert L.
