    3. For all of you interested in Laurelwood Cemetery records. Last week I said there was a list but it was not alphabetized. Yesterday I went to the local history room in the county library to check whether or not Laurelwood records were in the card catalog of York County cemetery listings. It is not. The card catalog contains all church cemeteries and private family cemeteries. Laurelwood is owned by the city of Rock Hill. Now, the good news is that since June 22, 1999 there is an alphetized list of burials in Laurelwood (no birthdates or death dates but burial dates). I was told that Ms Anne Wylie/Wyley? and employee in the Public Works division had, on her own run off a computer listing sorted by names of those buried. There are five city owned cemeteries: Barber Memorial (Black); Forest Hills; Hebrew; Laurelwood and Laurel Wood Old (this last is a separate listing). Here is what the listing has as categories: Location; Grave (a number); Owner (person who bought the plot(s)); Deceased (name); Date (date buried only); Order (the date the plot was purchased); Amount (price of plot); Receipt Number; and amount Paid (many had .01 as the amount paid and prices escalated over recent years to $1,000). There are no more available for purchase. Laurelwood Cemetery was opened in 1872 according to Mrs. Douglas Summers Brown's history of Rock Hill, CITY WITHOUT COBWEBS. That must be Old Laurelwood. I did not see any 1870s burials in the Laurelwood printout. Grave #24 was of James B. Bynum who was buried Dec 21, 1887, for instance. I hope this clears the matter.
