    1. [SCYORK] Census problem/mulatto
    2. Does anyone know if Indians were allowed to own land in York Co. SC in 1850? If a white woman were married to an Indian male or living with him, would she have been listed as the head of household during that time? (The area of the county does not appear to be in Indian lands.) I am trying to puzzle out a census on a woman in 1850, who is listed as head of household in York Co. In 1860, some of her adult children are given as mulatto on the census. No male head of household is given. Was mulatto used for anyone of mixed race (i.e. either Indian or black?) Janelle D.
