CHANEY is primarily a New England family name and these families are known to have started moving south, especially after the Revolution.. I also know of a rather prominent MCCLELLAN family from the Cabarrus County, NC area and some of them may have floated across the border into SC. This McCLELLAN family was collateral with the TATUM, POTTER, WHITE, COLLINS, HAYNES, SMITH and other families that were involved in the "Island Trading Business." This may mean links to VA, Charleston and to the islands. I know the POTTER and TATUM families were from St. Croix, DWI, at one point. Primarily this bunch was of the professional and/or merchant class. There were also links in this family back to Essex, Caroline and Bedford County areas of VA. My primary area of interest is the DANIEL family, which is also connected to this bunch.
