    3. Cortes Parker, like all found guilty of bastardy , would be responsible for the financial care of the child until the child was a certain age (10 years is typical but it could vary district by district). The county commissioners were charged with enforcing the law and mostly for the purpose of keeping the child being a public charge, in which case the child would be placed at the "poor farm". These would be those children too young to be apprenticed. York District had a "poor farm" and there were annual reports made by the person in charge to the Court of General Sessions (if I recall correctly). Also, the Yorkville Enquirer, from 1856, printed the annual reports of "Commissioners of the Poor." It was generally a report of money spent and the income from the farm and I don't believe identified bastards. I might add that years ago the State Archives published a listing of all the microfilms of local government records for all the 46 counties. York County's listing included "Bastardy Bonds and Papers, 1838-1928, Roll # C2105." I ordered the reel but only received a letter that basicly said that such a microfilm did not exist. Somewhat later I asked a person who had worked at the archives to check into this again and was told that the records existed but were sealed because a member of the legislature (the name was not given to me) had had the records put under seal--presumably because he had an ancestor involved in a bastardy case. I hasten to say that I do not know if this is true or just one of those stories that float around institutions... However, some of the bastardy cases did get into other cases for various reasons and if you delve into court records long enough you will stumble upon such cases.
