This came from another list. Betty H. Battle of Gettysburg - July 1-3, 1863 I have visited Gettysburg several times as it was a very important battle and was the major turning point in the Civil War. The Union Army under General Meade had about 90,000 men and suffered about 18,000 casualties in this battle. The Confederate Army under General Lee had about 75,000 men and had more than 20,000 casualties. I had a Great Uncle killed there as a member of the 4th Texas Regt, Hood's Division. I had attempted several times in the past to find his grave there but to no avail. Finally a Civil War buff told me that when Gettysburg became a National Battlefield Park in 1895 they would not allow the Confederate dead to remain there as they still considered them traitors for not being loyal to the Union. Therefore, his body was moved to the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. About 450,000 people died as a result of the Civil War. More people were killed in the Civil War than in all of the other wars this country has ever ought - xxxxxx xxxxx
