As a younger son he could not benefit from primogeniture so apparently set off on his own for adventure in the colonies. He landed in Charleston SC in 1735. Now as to who he got his commission from in Charleston. SC was a royal colony with a "Royal Governor"--that is appointed by the Crown. While I could not find exact information I believe that this James Adair, who declared himself originally as a trader, was most like appointed by Governor Thomas Broughton but I am not absolutely sure of that. It would take a bit of research if you ever wish to establish the nature of the appointment.

My understanding is that most of them came down from Delaware, then probably through the Augusta area of VA, then to central NC before York. Would love to hear more info, though. I am looking for a family with a Caleb GARRISON, born 1775 in NC, married Sarah FLEMING. I suspect his father was John GARRISON, as that was the name of Caleb and Sarah's first son.... Look forward to hearing more discussion! Thanks Zou Feagin zfeagin@aol.com

Would you be so kind as to advise me if it was an appointment / commission based in London (i.e. there was a William Adair, Secretary of Virginia, but he was based in London) or whether it was an appointment / commission made in America and ratified in London by King George III, please. I have been attempting to find the Record Group to look up the actual appointment for the Adair family history, and your help would be most appreciated. Thankyou. There was a James Park Adair in York County in the 1790 census.
I have placed the 1850 and 1860 York County Slave Census on the York County GenWeb page. It shows the names of the slave owners and number of slaves owned. Roxsanne
Anyone who cares, I have been "into" genealogy since 1986. I continue to be amazed at the number of researchers who who live in a County and never tell you what State they are in. And the number of people who live in a city and never tell you what County or State they are in. Example: "I live in St. Clair and have relatives in Jefferson County" You are left to guess what State either place is in. Also the frequent use of the words "her'", "his" "theirs" when nowhere in the context is there a connector to hint at who they are talking about. An example would be: John Sr had a son John Jr and his ....." You are left to guess whether the "his" refers to Sr or Jr . The computer services are also not without blame: When asked for an "ID", one service offers '000d01c161bd$bfb66740$addbfea9@0telco.net' (41 characters) which, if I paste into the keyword box, I get a commercial for Otelco I am 71 years old, and I do not have a college education, but I do know how to spell. :>) I can 'read' between the lines to see the difference between 'to' and 'too' and between 'no' and 'know', but if you choose to refer to Jefferson County, I would really like to 'know" what State you are refering 'to'.
