I received a message from Fronie Shelton and Al Hutchison, Sr. about the Old Unity Cemetery--Fort Mill, Sc that Louise Pettus sent. Yes, I received all and was so happy to get it. Since my July posting I have been able to find some more information on the ADAIR FAMILY OF YORK SC. in the 1700's. The Faires Family has been extremely helpful in my search. At this point, thanks to information in the Faires Family papers I am now searching the New Castle, PA (now DE) area where James Faires lived before moving to York SC. in the 1700's. James married Jean Adair and she had a brother in New Castle in that period of time. I'm hoping I can make a connection to the family of John Adair in DE. if that is where he lived before coming to York Co. At the present time I've hit a brick wall as to where John Adair came from originally but if anyone needs information about the Adair Family of York SC please contact me and I'll share what I know so far. Thanks to Louise Pettus who has given everyone such great information too. As you know we can never get too much information 'cause every little bit helps. Thanks to everyone for their generous help. Anyone out there with information on the family of Alsey and Sarah Fuller who lived in present-day Fort Mill township of York County? I know that Alsey died 11 Aug. 1843 and Sarah died 29 Dec 1845. Their son Isham died 14 Feb 1846 at the age of 35. Was Rebecca (Burton) Fuller the wife of Isham? Or, was she married to a brother of Isham? Rebecca named a son Alsey and remarried to Jackson Laney, The Laneys moved to Meriwether County, Georgia in time to be in the 1850 census there. The obituary of Lucinda Gladden Wells states that her maiden name was Gladden. There is an Old Wells Family History that states "older family members claim she was the daughter of Joseph Gladden Jr. This cannot be proved or disapproved. She was probably born about 1814 although her obituary states she was born 1808. This 1808 could not be correct. She appears on the 1850 census age 30, her first child was born in 1831. Joseph Gladden Jr. probably had a granddaughter, Morcona Ann Gladden who married Logan Huffstellar, and inherited from the estate of Joseph Jr. No one knows which one of the sons of Joseph Jr was her father. She was born 1836. Some family members claim they were told that Morcona Gladden and Lucinda Gladden were sisters. I do not know when this info in the Wells Family history was obtained." The history has been worked on and passed to several generations. I have yet to find anything in it that is incorrect.

It cannot be known for certain, who, or how many persons are buried in unmarked graves, for there is no known written record of those interred. "Unity Presbyterian Church has a long history in the area. The first building was erected before 1788 in York County near the Lancaster County line, between Steele and Sugar Creeks. The second edifice was built in 1804 near the old cemetery, about 1 mile west of the first location. It was made of logs and had 12 corners. In 1839, the third building was erected on Tom Hall Street in Fort Mill. The name was changed to Fort Mill in 1876, but changed back to Unity around the turn of the century. "The present Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill was built in 1881, of handmade brick. In the rear of the building is the 'new' Unity graveyard. "In transcribing the tombstones at Old Unity cemetery, exact terminology was sacrificed for brevity, except where reference is made to Revolutionary service. All names are spelled as shown on the gravestones." A footnote to the article reads: "NOTE: Miss Faris writes: To my knowledge, there is no written record of the graves in Old Unity Cemetery, Fort Mill, S.C. With the help of an adult nephew, I copied pertinent information from every stone. We marked each stone with chalk to insure our copying all of them. It is my understanding that court records are a matter of public record. If they will not give them to you with that 'leverage' file a Freedom Of Information Request. All you would need to do there is ask for the specific piece (i.e. the microfilm roll) in writting, and say "I am requesting this as a Freedom of Information Request." At which point they have to give it to you within ten days...but they may charge you a duplication fee. One of the listings (this was probably in the late 1970s or early 1980s) reads, and I quote: Office: Records of the Court of General Sessions Series Dates Roll# 1. Bastardy Bonds and Papers 1838-1928 C2105 unquote. I ordered that particular roll-C2105- and was told that it was not available. When I inquired further I was told that this microfilm did not exist. Another person told me (unofficially and not in writing) that the bastardy bonds were objected to by a member of the legislature and that was why they were not available. For this last statement I cannot vouch. But I do know that I received the microfilm number from the archives and have it with its attending information in front of me as I type.
