I just thought I would spread the word that the fees for getting a copy of a Social Security Application are going up drastically on 1 July 2001. If you apply before then you will be charged the old amount which is now $7 if you know the number, and $16.50 if you do not. The new fees are posted at: http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm It appears that the increases are more than substantial, they are gigantic. This means that the time for procrastination is over. The address you need to send them to is: Social Security Administration Office of Central Records Operation Attention: Freedom of Information Workgroup PO Box 17772 300 N. The Charles Miller family was living in York Co., SC in the late 1700's. I am related thru Charles Miller, Sr. (and his wife Sarah Priscilla Lucas) and their daughter Elizabeth Miller who married Theodorick Webb ... they had one child (Elizabeth, the mother, must have died just after childbirth) ... their child was Priscilla Webb. I "may be related" thru another daughter, Priscilla Miller, who married Andrew Kennedy. That is the line that I am most interested in. I have read that Andrew Kennedy was the paternal grandfather of George Alexander Kennedy (and his sibling sisters: Jane/Jeannie; Patsy/Martha; Fannie Lanura/Lemira; and Elizabeth P. Kennedy). This is important because the paternal grandfather, Alexander Kennedy, took the children to their maternal grandparents abt 1807, in Maury Co. TN to live with them. If that is the case, the Andrew Kennedy is the father of my "mystery" Alexander Kennedy who married Mary-Elizabeth Cathey (daughter of John P. Cathey and his wife Mary Erwin). I would really like to know more about daughter who married Andrew Kennedy. Thanks - for anything you can do to help me out with my searches ... both Jan Erwin Dunham

This came from another list. Betty H. Battle of Gettysburg - July 1-3, 1863 I have visited Gettysburg several times as it was a very important battle and was the major turning point in the Civil War. The Union Army under General Meade had about 90,000 men and suffered about 18,000 casualties in this battle. The Confederate Army under General Lee had about 75,000 men and had more than 20,000 casualties. I had a Great Uncle killed there as a member of the 4th Texas Regt, Hood's Division. I had attempted several times in the past to find his grave there but to no avail. Finally a Civil War buff told me that when Gettysburg became a National Battlefield Park in 1895 they would not allow the Confederate dead to remain there as they still considered them traitors for not being loyal to the Union. Therefore, his body was moved to the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. About 450,000 people died as a result of the Civil War. More people were killed in the Civil War than in all of the other wars this country has ever ought - xxxxxx xxxxx

SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/York/10532 Surname: MCELWEE, MCILWEE ------------------------- Frederick Hambright is mentioned in a land deed dated 1765. His land borders my relative William McElwees land.William McElwees house was located on what is now Kings Mountain State Park. The house is approximately two miles from the battle site at Kings Mountain. Willaim McElwee and two of his sons fought at Kings Mountain. William McElwee was promoted to leutenant after the battle of Hanging Rock by Thomas Sumter. Do you know if Frederick Hambright fought at that battle? I think I read somewhere that he did. Not sure though. In 1849, a writer named Lossings stopped by the McElwee house as he was sketching pictures from the Kings Mountain battle site and he interviewed McElwee who at the time was 87 years old and the last living member of Sumters men. This interview is printed in one of Lossings many books and maybe he mentions Hambright in the article or one of his many others. Hope this helps you. Roy McIlwee, Scranton, Pennsylvania.

SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/York/10527 Surname: craig, robb, drumright, campbell ------------------------- hi, I am doing research, for a lady out of charleston, south carolina. her grandfather was samuel hunter craig, born, may 16, 1870, and died, january 23, 1923. his father was H.L. Craig, this was on his death cerificate, I got in iredell county, north carolina. now, on samuel's death record, it said he was born, in gaston county, north carolina, but on his marriage certificate, it said he was born, in york county, south carolina, I beleive, gaston county, nc, is located, near by to york county, sc, so they probably crossed over a few times, in where they lived. Don't know, who the wife of H.L. Craig is, because it was not on samuel's death certificate. samuel was married twice, first time to minnie mae drumright, of iredell county, north carolina, in 1893, she died after they had 5 children, in 1911. he remarried, to lizzie mae robb, of iredell county, nc, in 1913, and had one more child, vergie mae craig, who married robert ellis campbell. if any of this sounds familiar, I would like as much information, as you can share, on this craig, family. thank you, larry shelton
