Yes - according to my grandmother he was my great grandfather and married to Joanna Nesmith (1854.) But I've just heard from someone that Margaret A. Nesmith, May 29, 1848 - Jan. 2. 1944 "wife of Capt. John Ferdon, Sept 3, 1835 is buried in the Nesmith Cemetery, Turkey Creek -- Nesmith Community, I think in South Carolina So my questions are, Could he have been the Ferdon who was a student, I think< at the Citadel and fought in the Civil War? (but he would have been 26 in 1861. And his son, John Haskell, born in 1864 was said to have been "hidden in the swamp when he was a baby and the yankees came" The swamp being the Okekenofe (sp) in Georgia. And did the Northern troops get that far south?? And did he marry Joanna - who then died - and then Margaret? Were they sisters? The baby (John Haskell) had to have been born in Georgia - to have been hidden in the swamp - but if his mother WAS Joanna, as I've been told, then was Margaret left in SC - and Joanna a second marriage But of course they didn't do that in those days!
