On my husband's great-grandfather's SSN application, signed in 1937, he gives place of business as "DAWSON ENG. CO." and their address as "10-GILLON ST. CHARLESTON, S. C." Does anyone know what this company did? I've found the address on a map, it is right next to the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon in Historical Charleston. However the company is no longer there, and I'd like to know what it was. For his own address, he listed "NONE" for street and number, and "ANDREWS, S. C." for Post Office and State. In 1910, he said he was a farmer, in 1920 he said he was a general merchant. On his death certificate, he was a retired building contractor. I also have a note that he was a railroad worker.
