To Lists Subscribers, I need to find out if the problem I am having with Ancestry.Com is a prevalent problem with others who have signed up for a Free 14 day Free Trial Offer and giving your credit card number and continue to be charged month after month even though you requested in writing to take your name off the 14 - Free Trial Use and requesting that no charges be made to your credit card. On May 14, 2003, there was a 14 day Free Trial Use of Ancestry.Com advertised and I signed up for it. Even though it was advertised as a 14-Day Free Trial Use, Ancestry.Com requested my Credit Card number (which I gave in good faith). After a few days, I realized that they did not offer me much more than I could get on the Free Genealogy Pages. Therefore, I wrote to them and asked that my name be removed from the Free Trial Use, and PLEASE NOT MAKE ANY CHARGES ON MY CREDIT CARD. I failed to get a reply. Every few days I would get an e-mail Newsletter, which I deleted....and I wrote Ancestry.Com to please not send me anything further, and NOT USE MY Credit Card. In June, when I received my Credit Card bill, they had made two (2) month's charges of $24.00 each on my credit card. I, again, wrote them to please remove my name, that I did not use the 14 day Free Trial but 3-4 days, to please not send me any Ancestry.Com information that could be construed as my using Ancestry.Com. However, they continued to send me Newsletters (which I deleted). Finally, I wrote (probably 5-6 e-mails) again and said that my last e-mail would serve as a legal notice and proof that I did not want nor did I sign up for Ancestry.Com. Immediately, before I could finish my e-mail, Ancestry.Com came on and sent me an e-mail stating they would discontinue sending me further info. I thought everything had been reconciled, and when I received my present credit card statement, even after I received that letter stating they would not send further info, they charged $24.00 again. I was wondering if others on these list that have signed up for a 14-Day Free Trial Use of Ancestry.Com has confronted this problem? If so, it should be brought to light. If I felt they gave me or helped me with info that I was looking for, it would have been worth it to spend $24.00/month, however, at the point I am in my genealogy, I need to get that info from Courthouses and Archives so I will have documentation of my genealogy. There are so many good places offered free for other's individuals genealogy, if you want to use it. I would like to hear from anyone else that may have confronted this problem. I called the major credit card company and they charged Ancestry.Com for the charges made on my June billing and reimbursed my account. Now, I have to notify of the charges again made and see if they will again credit my account and try to get their money from Ancestry.Com. I have never felt so VIOLATED.....by trusting a national genealogical business, giving my credit card number willingly, and being cheated, time and time again. Many of us cannot afford an attorney for small charges made against our credit cards, and an attorney probably would not take such a small case. I am a senior citizen, and do not have money to waste (or stolen). The only thing that I am considering since I live in Texas where we have the Deceptive Trade Law is to send all my cross-correspondence and copies of my credit card bill to the State Attorney General's Office, who enforces deceptive trade practices. I love genealogy and have made every effort by mail (in writing) to reconcile this in case it was a mistake, but when they continue to make charges against my credit card for services that I DO NOT WANT and HAVE NOT USED, I feel that I must do what I can to protect myself. There may be many persons who this has happened to and they are not aware of anything they can do about it. Thanks, Betty Rich Paxson
Note to BLRIC@aol.com I have had some problems with Ancestry and have known of several more who have had problems with Ancestry. I don't know is their problem is deliberate or if they don't have enough staff to handle subscriptions, etc. This has been going on for two or three years to my knowledge. Therefore,, I believe if Ancestry wants to maintin its credibility, they should employ adequate staff to handle these matters. We, as customers, buy from Ancestry in good faith, and it is very disappointing that they, for some reason, are not able to take care of the clientele. --- BLRIC@aol.com wrote: > To Lists Subscribers, > > I need to find out if the problem I am having with > Ancestry.Com is a > prevalent problem with others who have signed up for > a Free 14 day Free Trial Offer > and giving your credit card number and continue to > be charged month after month > even though you requested in writing to take your > name off the 14 - Free Trial > Use and requesting that no charges be made to your > credit card. > __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? You are a nice person, but it is a scam plain and simple, under staffed? Nay, they will do anything for the extra buck and the sooner all of you start standing up the sooner we can get back to research, let them know you will not be part of a scam and quit/stop membership if you have to, you won't melt or freeze up without them, if they do not get their act together there are many rich folks out there just waiting for a chance like this or a weakness is a better word to jump in with a decent offer that will take Ancestry over or put them out of business one of the two, I have been buying business's all most of my 70 years and I can smell a fall a mile off and this my friends is a fall of morals and honesty and management, upper and lower, and with customers as yourselves they will NOT succeed...Marvin Steward Just remember a old friend and fishing buddy of mine here in Texas use to say and most of you heard him say it, "if it looks like a snake, moves like a snake then my friend it must be a snake" my buddy and friend said that, Ross... I tried to cancel after a year; however, they charged my credit for another annual subscription. They used my previous year's authorization for the charge. When I told Ancestry that I was going to get my credit card company to reverse the charge, they said I could do nothing since they had already been paid. They evidently know how to work the system since my credit card company told me that I should have contacted them prior to the charge since Ancestry provided authorization. Thus nothing could be done. Ancestry finally gave me a cancellatioin which will be good at the end of my current subscription. It is a terrible scam. I have used Ancestry off and on for a number of years and have had no problems. Sometimes I had to be patient for someone to answer the line for cancellations but ultimately I was able to take care of things without a major problem. Betty, You can call the credit card company and have the charges reversed. They will investigate and settle the matter for you. Readers! It is very important that if you subscribe for the 14 day "free" trial offer...that you "Call" Ancestry's Office (they provide you with the number when you subscribe) and "cancel" your account. That is a must or you will continue to be billed.
