    1. [SCUNION] Re: HUGHES to Jeannine

    3. Here's some of what I found on the Hughes, Hughes in the late 1700's was spelled Hughs but it was the same family that always lived next to my Addis family but I noticed in the 1800's they started spelling it with an e on the end. At least on of the Hugh(e)s was always listed with any legal papers with an Addis', I figured they must of been friends. I know that Richard Addis served with John Joseph Hughs in Rev war because he is listed in Richards Rev war papers that I have. John Joseph Hughs was Captain Joseph Hughs. He became a Captain in the Rev war. Union County SC Deed Abstracts C, 197-198 pg 116 29 June 1791 William Savage sells his land to Daniel Nogher (shoemaker), The land adjoined, Richard Addis, John Joseph Hughs and Benjamin Woodson. Their land was on Broad River. The actual sale of the land was on 17 aug 1784. In the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Volume XX, Number 2, Spring, 1992 you'll find where in 1828 Joseph Hughes (one of John Josephs Hughs sons) is juror for a coroners inquisitions. This Joseph Hughes was always mentioned with my Jospeh Addis (son of Richard Addis) (this is a guess, but I would say these two where friends because they later witness land transactions for each other). This Joseph Hughes middle intial is F. John Joseph Hughs sometime called John or sometime Joseph along with John Joseph, lived next to Richard Addis, and James Savage, Benjamin Woodson, in late 1700's on Broad River, Union county, SC. South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral REsearch VolumeXVII Number 2 Spring 1989 on June 13 1818 Joseph and Richard Hughes gave their oath that James (Samuel?) Adis was the man found drowned in Broad River. In Richard Addis Will the land he left to his granddaughter was on what was called, "Hughs Creek waters of Broad River". "Union Co., Heritage" 1981 Edition Story #286 Thomas and William Hughes Family This story mentions a settlement that was five miles down the Broad River from the Lockhart Shoals. The Hughes family settled there, and they were joined by other families from VA and NC. The Addis family was one of those, along with the families of Smith, Cook, McLanney, Albertson, Culbertson and Harrison. Thomas, William, Richard and Joseph F. Hughes are just some of the sons of John Joseph Hughs. John Joseph was settled in this area in 1784 but I don't know when he settled this area. If I find more info I will send it. Hope this helps..
