Clear DayCan anyone tell me where to find information on the townships Gandiesville and Draytonville? My gggrandparents lived in the former, and she later remarried and lived in the latter township. I can't locate them by search, so I assume they have ceased to exist or have been renamed. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Edna King-Miller Atascadero, CA
Edna: the area you refer to is probably an area that still exist in Cherokee County, South Carolina that borders Union County, South Carolina. the Proper area name i believe is the Gaudiesville area and the Draytonville area. They both exist at the present time in Cherokee County of South Carolina, hope that this will help in ur search. Have a lovelt day. The Gowdeysville township of Cherokee County was part of Union County prior to the 1897 formation of Cherokee and is a present township. I've not looked at the census reports of Draytonville township but would expect that this area too was part of Union county before the division to create Cherokee. The challenge of research then is to understand that 1) census and other written reports for the area will be listed as in Union County and 2) the churches, schools, and cemeteries will be found in present Cherokee County. Since most of the extant cemetery transcriptions were published after 1900, they will show that the area is Cherokee County even if a burial occured before 1897 in what was (at the time) Union County. Further, that area around Gowdeysville was near the then border of Union and York -- several families appear to have attended churches that were then in York County. Albeit, a part of York County that later became Cherokee County. Cherokee County was created in 1897 from parts of Union, York, and Spartanburg Counties.
