    3. Steve: Need help with saving the Springhill Cemetery which is Laurens or Union County South Carolina. I am a born northerner with southern roots. In my middle age, I have become interested in preserving the history of my people. The original church burned down, in the 50's or so, and I went out with my cousin a couple of years ago to find the old cemetery which was behind the old church because my greatgrandmother is buried there. We found the place, it is totally overgrown, and only Lord knows when the last burial was. As with many small towns in the rural south, the young people have moved away. The church seems to by dying because there is not young blood to carry it on. Be that as it may, I want to get the old cemetery preserved, and cleaned up. Any help with how to go about that would sincerely be appreciated. Before you ask, I am not from Plains Georgia, and no relation to the former President, although I do admire him. --- Webmaster 7 <webmaster7@comporium.net> wrote: > I would like to take this opportunity to introduce > myself. 3. Steve, I am from Alabama, two years ago we traveled to Union County, SC to do some "digging" on my acestors. The people we encountered in Union and the surrounding area were unusually helpful. They were very friendly and willing to be of help. BUT, even with this help we were unable to locate the SMITH CEMETERY. Was told that it is near Kelton community. Out there a very nice couple told us that it was now on some man's property, and he was hard to deal with and had probably destroyed what remaining graves there were. I am very interested in locating and preserving this cemetery. The names I am aware of are: John SMITH, and Robert P. SMITH. These are my ancestors, my father is a SMITH. Can you help me? I know that this cemetery is listed in the book on SC Union County Cemeteries by E. W. Whaley. And from a map service on the computer I found the the Latitude is 345158N and Longitude to be 0813521, hope this can help you. May I hear from you?
