    3. Bunny,I have been trying for several years, to get past my ggrandfather, Joseph Clark Anthony(according to the 1860 TX census, who was 30 yrs. old and born in GA). This census shows the following: Caldwell, TX, Burleson county. J. C. Anthony 30 M Farmer GA Mary Anthony 20 F TX W.B. Anthony 27 M Farmer GA Thomas Green 17 M Farm Laborer TX Robert Green 12 M TX W. B.(William Bryant) could be a brother or cousin, since that's the name J.C. gave his son. Thomas and Robert may have been Mary A.E. Green(Mollie's) brothers or cousins. In the book "Astride the Old San Antonio Road", J.C. and "Mollie" are mentioned. J.C. appointed a guardian for his children (William Bryant, b. 27 Feb 1862 and Mina, b. 1859-60) and went off to war. The Confed. Arch., Ch. 6, File No. 297, pg. 45, shows he died in the CSA General Hospital, Shreveport, LA on 15 Feb 1865 of dysentery. He was enrolled in Co A, 17th Tx Infantry, "Allen's Own". I checked the 1850 census in Wilkes, Elbert counties in GA, for Anthony's there, but find no record of J.C's birth, nor of W. B. either. There were several Anthony's with the middle name Clark. I have a copy of Suzanne Gorey's list of Anthony's, I've used prior census records, used Vashti Anthony's book on Anthonys, and still have come up DRY! I feel if I can get over that first hurdle, between 1830-1850, I've probably got records that will tie me in with Anthony's further back. What are your rates, and an estimate of how much it would cost to do the one generation research? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bunnie Gilmer" <indigo@alltel.net> To: <SCUNION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 28, 2002 4:33 PM Subject: Re: [SCUNION] GADBERRY Family of Union, Spartanburg and Laurens County > HI, > > I don't know if you are interested in a paid researcher or not, but I do > research in this area of SC. 1. Re: [SCUNION] GADBERRY Family of Union, Spartanburg and Laurens County
    2. Thank you friend for your response. We have discussed this matter briefly before. I had found maybe three people who lived in the immediate areas, and so I engaged them to do the research. I am in no way criticizing their efforts, but they were unsuccessful mainly in discovering anything. The only identifiable character that we know anything about is COL. JAMES M. GADBERRY of Union County. He did leave a will, and I was able to reconstruct a tentative sibling listing, but our main goal of identifying his parents has never been reached. The name is rare, and thus far any GADBERRY that has turned up in SC are members of the family we are researching. I have one more, possible source of information and am waiting on a response from the State of Idaho. This, likely, could also be a failure. If you will, please do give me details on your rates, etc and I will at least have them if this current efforts fails. Gratefully Harold C. Fisher Yazoo City, Mississippi

I live in Toccoa, Ga, but can travel to Greenville, SC, where I have access to the deeds and estate records, with indexes, of Spartanburg and Union Counties. I also have access to the deeds and indexes of Laurens Co., and there are some estate records of Laurens, but I don't remember for sure just what those were. I would have to check on those. Have you checked all these sources for records of your Gadberry family? The Greenville Library also has the State Land Plats for the state grants that were given over the entire state. 3. Well said Bob. Sometimes even a city and state are not enough. I was corresponding with a person that had reference to ancestor in 'Concord'. Did you know that 31 states have a 'Concord'? And it even gets worse that. There's a Concord in 7 different counties in TX, 6 in TN, 5 in AL and NC, 4 in OH, KY and VA, 3 in GA, MO and PA, and so on. So, a thorough description of the location is critical. 1. [SCUNION] finding locations the easy way
    2. James and Sue Stone
    3. Hi fellow listers, I just want you all to know of a FREE website which will help you find locations. It is called "Topozone" The website is located at www.topozone.com Go to website and type in your location in the appropriate spot, and the state if you know it. If you don't know the state you will likely get ALL the locations names in the country, which might be overwhelming. Once you execute your search you will receive a list of places with a bunch of information like county, state, longitude, latitude, elevation, and such like. Handily, the places will be hyperlinked to an interactive map. If your location was a stream, you can go upstream or downstream, zoom in to show one particular area or zoom out til you can practically see the entire state, and so forth. I use the site a lot. I don't get paid to talk about topozone, but I profit greatly by helping co-listers find places they are looking for. James Stone

Blount Co. also adjoins St. Clair and Jefferson Co.Otelco.net is an ISP in Oneonta. I've used their services in the past so there a few postings made by me in the archives. The Johns may be my flub... I have John Inman Sr. (further information unknown) who had John Inman Jr. John Jr. married Sarah (Sally) Fielder. Sarah Fielder was the daughter of Ruth Farmer and Thomas Fielder of VA. I believe Ruth Farmer was Ruth Sudberry, widow of Forrest Farmer, also of VA. Among the other children of John Inman Jr. and Sarah Fielder was my ancestor, John III who married Winnie Going, daughter of Thomas Baxter Going. Thomas B. 2. Anyone who cares, I have been "into" genealogy since 1986. I continue to be amazed at the number of researchers who who live in a County and never tell you what State they are in. And the number of people who live in a city and never tell you what County or State they are in. Example: "I live in St. Clair and have relatives in Jefferson County" You are left to guess what State either place is in. Also the frequent use of the words "her'", "his" "theirs" when nowhere in the context is there a connector to hint at who they are talking about. An example would be: John Sr had a son John Jr and his ....." You are left to guess whether the "his" refers to Sr or Jr . The computer services are also not without blame: When asked for an "ID", one service offers '000d01c161bd$bfb66740$addbfea9@0telco.net' (41 characters) which, if I paste into the keyword box, I get a commercial for Otelco I am 71 years old, and I do not have a college education, but I do know how to spell. :>) I can 'read' between the lines to see the difference between 'to' and 'too' and between 'no' and 'know', but if you choose to refer to Jefferson County, I would really like to 'know" what State you are refering 'to'. 2. Eldon Wade
    3. Hi Rex, I am confident that there are more than one Neals Creek. My data like yours shows one Neals Creek in south Anderson Co very near Elbert Co GA. This Neals Creek seems to tie into Rocky River and probably is the one I am investigating. When looking at old maps I think, but can't be sure, that this area was part of the Old Pendleton District. The other one is in Union Co and seems to flow very close to if not into the Broad River. This I got from a very old map of Union Co. I have abstracts of six deeds, which are probably part of the same tract, and all six deeds refer to Neals Creek (spelled variously) on Rocky River and were recorded in Pendleton District between 1784 and 1804. Here seems to be a key issue - since Pendleton Dist broke up into Anderson and Pickens counties is it safe to assume that land referred to in a Pendleton deed must surely be in Anderson Co or Pickens Co??? I have not had the chance to see the present day tract books so I don't know if any of the land was taken for the Richard B. Russell Lake and Dam. Thanks, Eldon -----Original Message----- From: Rex Kirby [mailto:rex@tyler.net] Sent: Friday, March 29, 2002 11:52 PM To: SCUNION-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SCUNION] Where is Neal's Creek on Rocky River? There may be more than one Neal's Creek. On an old SC Map of Geographical Locations of Waterways I have Rocky River is shown west of Little River west of Abbeville running into the Savannah River adjacent to Elbert Co, GA approximately 20 miles south of present day Hartwell Dam. It also looks like Rocky River may have been taken in by the Richard B. Russell Lake and Dam and Little River may be in Clarks Hill Lake and Dam in the Sumter National Forest. Russell Lake seems to track the old Rocky River near Calhoun Falls running north by Lowndesville all the way up into Anderson Co north of Antreville. Which raises an interesting question for Eldon and that is do the deed records show any of the land you're researching to have been purchased or condemned by the State of South Carolina for inclusion in the Richard B. Russell Lake? And by the way, I am not from SC so who was (or is) Richard B Russell and how did the rather large lake get to be named after him? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this area in the old Ninety Six District and maybe part of the old Pendleton District? And Laura, speaking of names, do you know why it was called Ninety Six District? Do you know of a web site that would contain historical information or maps of this old district? Many of my Kirby and Garner ancestors and related kin were from this area and I suspect that many of them are still there. I'm told that one of the Kirby's operated an Indian Trading Post about 100 miles inside the Indian Lands which I believe was before 1777. Wasn't this the area now in Oconee, Pickens, Greenville and Anderson Counties? Of course, many of my ancestors and those that stayed in SC were also in Union Co but I have not checked for any reference to Neal's Creek on land they owned. If I find Neal's Creek maybe I can find an answer to your question. 3. This is actually a Georgia reference. Richard B Russell (jr) was a prominent politition. State representative, Governor, US Senator. see: http://www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/russell/rbrbio.htm and http://www.geocities.com/ssn687/ -----Original Message----- From: Rex Kirby [mailto:rex@tyler.net] Sent: Friday, March 29, 2002 11:52 PM To: SCUNION-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SCUNION] Where is Neal's Creek on Rocky River? 3.
