    1. Re: [SCUNION] Copying Deeds - Clerk's Office
    2. The first thing I did was send a couple of dollars and asked for a copy of the index page for the surname I was researching. I gave them a time frame. I did not tell them I was doing genealogy. When I got the index I ordered the page numbers I wanted. Genealogy was never mentioned. Has the LDS microfilmed SC records? Karen Smith

    3. I had a message from another person on the list who tried to get probate copies from Union Co. back in the spring, and was told they no longer did this for people doing genealogy research, and to contact the SC Archives. So...................... Sandra Kdwsmith@aol.com wrote: >In the latter 1980s I paid about 25 cents a page, but no idea what the cost >would be today. 2. Sandra, I am definitely not a researcher but I will be going to the Archives hopefully on Monday and I check to see if I can locate anything for you. I have just recently started reseraching the surname "Duncan" whom I believe came from Union Area. Sandy Fontanella SFontanel@aol.com

    3. Pat and Mickey, Thanks for the update on the possibility of marriage bonds in Union Co. and/or SC. I won't be able to get to SC anytime in the near future - does anyone know a researcher who could look in the county court minutes of Union Co. for me? If I could just find a marriage bond for Lydia Clanton and Joseph Moorhead with maybe Sion Clanton as the bondsman, that would come close to proving Lydia was of Charles Clanton's family. Sandra

    3. Mickey, Sometime you get 'lucky' and find that the couple has a marriage bond - these are usually located in the county court minutes. County court minutes are usually not indexed, so be prepared to do some page by page looking, and still not find the marriage bond. Another source is old newspapers, for the posting of the banns, and perhaps in later times an item about the wedding. The latter might be found in 'community news' type columns. Pat M. 3. I have been researching the Faucett family of Union County and have been lucky enough to determine the maiden names of most of the early Faucett men through probate records where their wives are recorded in the estate settlement of a parent. Unfortunately, I have no marriage dates but did determine that Richard, Samuel and Giles Night Faucett married into the Whitlock, Smith and Giles families. All three of these marriages took place circa 1780-1800. You can usually calculate the year of marriage as one or two years before the birth of the first child. If your ancestors were Baptist you might be lucky enough to find church records at Furman University (Greenville, SC) for the church they attend that might include a marriage announcement. Methodist church records can be found at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. I doubt, though, that many church records survive before 1800. 3. Sorry, Sandra, neither the State of South Carolina nor the counties kept marriage records until about 1910. They considered marriages to be a matter for the Church. And that would have been fine except almost no Church records have survived. All of us are in the same boat on that one! 1. [SCUNION] Blackwell families in Gowdeysville circa 1880
    2. Carson and Betty's genealogy research
    3. In the 1880 Union County census on page 530b there are the following families neighboring: * John Rufus Peeler (aged 46) and wife Martha Elizabeth (Blackwell) Peeler (aged 21) with children: Rufus S. age 3, Lula June age 1, and James Madison age 19. Also in the home are her (Martha's) borthers W. Zach age 17 and Joseph W. aged 15. * Neighboring are William Blackwell (aged 65) and Augusta (aged 40) >From other research I know that this John Rufus Peeler was married first to Sarah Ann Hambright who died in 1870. John Peeler died in 1907 in present Cherokee County. William Blackwell died in 1911 in Columbia SC. Augusta died after 1919. I have found one reference that lists Martha's father as Zachary Blackwell but unsourced. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with these families and whether William Blackwell and Martha Elizabeth Blackwell are related. Does anyone have information regarding the children of William and Augusta? Any help appreciated: CoachBetty@Softhome.net
