I am also very much in favor of the Old96 list. Would it be a good thing for all of us that are interested in this list to send an e-mail to Rootsweb voicing our support? Harold in Florida
In the winter of 1870-71 a group of about 70 people led by Rev. John J. Huckaby and his family went from Union, SC to Bogan Gist Plantation about 16 miles west of Helena, Arkansas. The Rev. Huckaby later established the Rehoboth Baptist Church, Phillips County, Arkansas. One of the couples was J. Franklin Shands and his wife, Elizabeth Farmer Shands along with their children; William A., Mary C., Mattie, and Nancy. Elizabeth was the daughter of Lawson and Nancy Wesson Farmer of the Dutchman Creek area of lower Spartanburg Co. SC right near the Union Co, SC border. Does anyone have more information on this group? Is there a list of all those who traveled to Arkansas? Martha "Patsy Farmer, a sister of Elizabeth Shands, evidently moved to Arkansas with her husband, Thomas M. Pruitt, a daughter, Sallie(Sarah) and her mother-in-law, Missouri Pruitt, after the 1870 census. In the 1880 census, Thomas Pruitt was a widower, in Sevier Co, Arkansas along with daughters, Sarah and Martha and a mother, Missouri Pruitt. Did they move out with the Huckaby group??? Hope someone out there knows about this group. Gayle
Ok, this is goofy to me on many levels. They could have said "at the present time we do not feel there is a need for the new list" or " you have not demonstrated enough evidence to warrant a new list" or, "could you please explain further" blah blah blah.. but "your request doesn't make sense" so we're not making a list ?!?!! Just out of curiosity.. did you send it to rootsweb in general or to the SC people? 'Cause a general roots web person in California might very well not understand the significance of Old 96 in SC. Maybe if a bunch of us write in requesting it, they'll realize they... just... wrong. ~LauraS .. all for an Old 96 list! Just rolling into this list. I'm researching the MURPHY name, particularly William B. MURPHY who is on the 1830 census. Hey John G., I see you're looking in Union Co. also. My notes say you were looking at Simon, Richard & Arthur MURPHY. Me too. I think Arthur's grandson William B. came down from Franklin Co. NC around 1820's and stayed in Union SC before moving on to Maury Co. TN in 1830s or so. Wm B.'s cousins ended up being part of the Donner party, Lemuel & others I think, grandkids? of Mark A. MURPHY. Ate their mother as I recall. Anyway. If anyone else researching these names or C.R. BASS, James COLLINS, HIGHT, BENTON, and others, drop me a line. For those that conduct research using the Cherokee County SCGenWeb Project pages, the web has been down for a couple days and we are aware and working on it. We've yet to hear from our web hosting service about the cause but hope that the pages will be back up very soon. Over the next few days, we will post up a mirror site by ftp to a new URL. Thanks for your patience... Carson Turner http://cherokee.ourfamily.com

Looking for Miles SMITH in Union County SC. He married a Miss COOPER (given name unknown). They had at least four children: Cora born about 1868, Elizabeth or Lizzie born about 1870, Walter and Clyde. Death certificates of both Cora and Elizabeth state they were born in Union County SC. In 1937 Elizabeth was still living in Union SC and was married to a WILBURN. Walter and Clyde SMITH were living in Kings Creek (Cherokee County) SC in 1937. Will appreciate any information or assistance. Thanks, JON JNich57@aol.com

Hello, my name is Rick. My gggg grandparents were supposed to have been married in Union County, SC in 1805. I am told by another researcher of the Renfro family that a marriage license was purchased by John Kennedy to marry Nancy Renfro in Union County, South Carolina in 1805. I need to know if such a record is there and if it contains any info about him and her. I would be willing to pay any charges incurred in looking this up for me. I have reached a point in my research that I really need this info. Rick
I am not trying to start a virus discussion here but there are some pretty bad new ones going around. Please protect yourselves by making sure your virus protection is up to date and by NOT, NOT, NOT opening attachments unless it is something you were expecting and from a source you know to be reliable. Microsoft'a e-mail (msn.com and Hotmail.com) seems to be down again. RootsWeb will automatically unsubscribe any address that has three consecutive "bounces." If any of you know any way, other than e-mail, to reach anyone with those addresses, you might tell them they may need to resubscribe. Hi, First time posting on the list, been lurking for a while. Am researching my Union ancestors on the Wallace side. William Wallace and Jennett Winter were my 4th great grand parents. They probably came to Union in late 1700's or early 1800's. I'm stymied on who their ancestors were or where they came from. Jennett is mentioned in "The Narrative History of Union County" by Allan Charles as owning 1288 acres in 1865. William and Jennett's daughter Caroline married Benjamin Herndon Rice. Their daughter Medora married William Wallace Duncan of Spartanburg. Their son Thomas Cary Duncan married Francis Adler Merriman and their daughter Medora Duncan was my grandmother. Would please like to share information with any connects to this line. Thanks. Jim Houston Hickory Creek, TX Researching Wallace, Rice, Merriman, Winter >

My g g g great Grandparents Dr.Jean Baptiste (JOHN}BURELb.abt. 1700 in Ollioules France and Patience Hannah (BIRD}BUREL settled at a place called Goshen Hill. They rased their family there and are buried at the cemetery there. I can not find it on a map. Is the place still there? Where is it located? Was there a reason why it was called Goshen Hill? Vonda L. Belluso
Sorry about the redundancy, Vonda, but I meant to share this with the group. Go to this website http://www.topozone.com/ Type Goshen Hill in the "Place Name Search" and SC in the state slot, then push "search." It will take you to a listing of Goshen Hill place names, click the blue hyperlinked one, which takes you to a topographical map of the area, with longitude, latitude, elevation, and the name of the USGS Quad containing the information. Goshen Hill appears just south of Delta, north of Whitmire. Or since I already found it, just go to this link... http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34.52111&lon=-81.56333 James Stone Topozone supporter (even though I don't get royalties or stock dividends from them!) veecee1 wrote: > > My g g g great Grandparents Dr.Jean Baptiste (JOHN}BURELb.abt. 1700 in > Ollioules France and Patience Hannah (BIRD}BUREL settled at a place called > Goshen Hill. They rased their family there and are buried at the cemetery > there.
