    1. [SCUNION] searching Nelson surname
    2. Joan Griffin
    3. My name is Joan and I'm searching for my great-great-grandfather, John Nelson (sorry, I don't have a middle name or initial for him). He was born in Union District, SC about 1808, moved to AL about 1830 and resided there until his death in 1861. He married Pertimary Russell b. abt. 1816 in Greenville District SC d. abt. 1848. John and Mary had 7 children, the eldest being William Colombus Nelson, my great-grandfather, who was born in Pickens County, AL, 7 May 1832, reared in MS, wound up in Grayson County, Texas. John Nelson was an extensive planter, a prominent man in his county and served many years as one of the county officials (don't know which state or county). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    3. I just want to wish everyone of you a healthy, happy and prosperous 2003. Also, may this be the year that we poke some holes in our brick walls! Your list mom, Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net

    1. [SCUNION] Genealogy and history
    2. Mildred "Mickey" Fournier
    3. Since all of us have our minds on the holidays, and not genealogical research, let's use the time until January first to share our own Christmas stories. How did your family celebrate the Holidays? What stories did your parents and grandparents tell you of their childhood Christmas traditions? That's not even really off-topic, is it? Isn't genealogy all about family history? I wish the best of everything for you and yours this Holiday Season. And when you say your prayers please be sure to remember the Americans who are far from home and family this year guarding our freedom to practice our own traditions. Your list mom, Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net

    1. RE: [SCUNION] Marriage query, lookup
    2. Mildred "Mickey" Fournier
    3. I am sorry to report that South Carolina kept no marriage records until after 1900. They considered marriage to be a concern for the Church, not the State. Problem is, nearly no Church records have survived. Unless you can find a newspaper announcement or something of that nature, you are going to have to do what the rest of us do...use a deed, will or some other document to prove the marriage took place and "best guess" the date. 3. Jim, I've seen your struggle to find a place to stay in Union. Go out the hwy going NW out of town, its a 4 lane going to Spartanburg. Just outside of town there are quite a few really nice motels. We stayed there last year. At this time of year, you should not have any trouble finding a vacancy. And by the way the liberary there is very helpful. Good luck.....Wanda
