"The Free Lance" Issue April 15, 1904 THROWN FROM BUGGY Union, April 14, T. K. PALMER was driving a spirited horse up Main street this morning when it became frightened and threw him out the buggy against the sidewalk, bruising his head fracturing a rib and knocked him unconscious for 20 minutes. [more] Issue May 13, 1904 Not Terrified by Highwaymen Buffalo-Armed and masked highwaymen have no terrors for Mrs. M. A. HALL of Niagra Street, North Tonawanda, when she is driving behind a horse. Mrs. HALL and her sister were driving from Buffalo to their home, and were nearing the city line at Kenmore at 9:45 o'clock last night when they were confronted by five masked highwaymen armed with revolvers. Two of the highwaymen were in a wagon which partly blocked the road. The other three were in the roadway. Mrs. HALL was driving slowly, and was almost abreast of the wagon when she saw the gleam of the revolvers under an electric light and heard the command to throw up her hands. Instead of doing so Mrs. HALL jerked the horse to one side and plied the whip. The spirited animal gave a mad plunge, grazed the wagon and toppled the three highwaymen who were in the road into the gutter. The highwaymen fired half a dozen shots at the women, but none took effect. The two women drove at a gallop to Kenmore, where they got aid and returned to the scene of the attempted robbery, but the highwaymen had escaped in their wagon through unlighted crossroads. [cut off] Issue May 27, 1904 Origin of Marriage Custom "Casting a shoe after a newly married couple is one of the oldest customs that still clings on the fabric of this up to date life." Centuries ago, nay, thousands of years ago, it was one of the means employed by the people of antiquity to indicate ownership. When a piece of land was purchased or given to one, or a man acquired ownership of a house, a cow or tidbit unto himself, a wife, it was the established custom to cast a shoe over the land, the building, the animal or the woman, thus asserting to the world that he had acquired rights of ownership. The custom is mentioned in several places in the Bible. Psalms IX, 8. . . Few who do it probably know why they cast a shoe after newly married, but in this ancient custom is its origin found. So does a relic of barbarism linger in our midst. {This is a lot different meaning than when married couples throw shoes now! Hi All, I have been posting tidbits from a Spartanburg weekly newspaper titled "The Free Lance" to the Spartanburg list. The message also stated that WAKEFIELDS brother, who was implicated by the coroner's jury, would soon be caught as it was known where he was hiding. The facts regarding the killing having been the result of a quarrel which took place in the Block House section where a number of sporting men has assembled to witness an interstate cocking main. The crime is said to have been committed three weeks ago on the person of Mrs. Mary Ann HILL, who is 78 years old. The delay in reporting the crime is claimed to be due to the fact that Mrs. HILL and her daughter, Mrs. Millie LOW, had been terrorized by ANDERSON and were afraid to make his deed public. Hello, I am new to the list, this is the family I am looking for: Joseph A. Garner, Born 1840 apparently in Union County from all that we have found. Known right now one brother William Manly Garner Born: July 4, 1835 Union County, and one other sister Peggy Garner, (possiable nick name) also born in Union County. These three children William , Joseph and Peggy have shown up on census reports as living in the house of Thomas Owensby's family in Union County, and think that his wife may also be related to these three children, as taking them in like they did in the 1850's. We were assuming that there parents were killed in the civil war to be alone at such young ages and in the home of someone else. Joseph A. Garner married Nancy Sparks in Union County they farmed in the Draytonville area, Peggy married Ransom L Kirby from the same area, and lived some period of time in the Spartanburg area, then lived in Union County afterwards. William married in Smith County, Texas after they left Union County in the mid 1870's as they are on land and county rolls here at this time. Now we are finding letters from Star Farms in Union County dated 1900, from William's niece Lular Sparks, daughter of Polly Garner, stating in her letter to William that her mother , your sister died 2 years ago, and she had been trying to reach him prior to this. Also I am looking for Enoch Garner of Union County, South Carolina. Brenda bmcomppton@juno.com
Eliphus L. Linder of Bogansville, Union Co, SC was evidently married twice. His first wife was Cornelia Sumner Linder who died 1 Nov. 1878 and is buried beside him at the Linder-Sumner Cemetery . Buried at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Union is Lucinda Linder 5-16-1844- 3-20-1896 wife of Eliffus Linder Does anyone have proof of the maiden name of Lucinda Linder? Does anyone have the names of the parents of Cornelia Sumner Linder? Thanks, Gayle

As ya'll may have noticed, we are not getting posts from the Rootsweb Message Boards. That's those messages that begin: "This is from a message board that is gatewayed to this list." I don't know what is wrong, I set them to accept and within ten minutes they are unset. If you have stopped monitoring the message boards because you are depending on this service (which is waht it was all about to begin with), you might want to start checking them again until this glitch is worked out. I will notify you at that time. Just in case we have newcomers who don't know what I am talking about, RootsWeb has message boards for each U.S. County and surname. Just go to www.Rootsweb.com, go down the page and see the message boards links. You can enter the surname or locality that you are interested in. You really should have a look if you have not already done so. They are now requiring you to register to post a message and some folks have refused to do that, so traffic is slower than it formerly was. But you can read the existing messages with or without registration. Your list mom, Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
Since I know we have several list members with Indian ancestry, I thought this might interest someone. Remember, if you need to contact Betty, you can do so by sending mailto:nanabjl@cs.com . Asking permission to send this out. I thought the Lockett list might like to know about this. Betty Lockett Nanabjl@cs.com Mantle Rock center invites Indian Elders to Crittendon County, Kentucky Speakers of different Indian Nations will be brought in by the Cherokee Center. A speaker is already set on prophecies. By Angie Kinsey The Paducah Sun December 27, 2002 Marion, Crittendon County, Kentucky American Indian elders from across the country are expected to visit Crittendon, County next year as guests of the Mantle Rock Native Education and cultural Center. The cultural center office opened this month at 110 Main Street on the courthouse square. "We don't want to limit this to Cherokees and Cherokee teachings," said Momfeather Erickson, a member of the Mantle Rock Cherokees who moved to Marion recently from Omaha, Nebraska. "We're bringing elders in from all different nations to do speaking. We want the elders to feel welcome to come here, no matter who they are. We want to welcome the world to come." Leon Secatero, leader of the Canoncito Navajo tribe in New Mexico, will speak February 18, on American Indian prophecies in the next 500 years. The time and location of his talk have not been determined. The center is named in honor of Mantle Rock in neighboring Livingston County, Kentucky, where hundreds of Cherokee perished in the winter of 1828 while traveling the "Trail Of Tears." The center will be headquarters for Turtle racks, an American Indian online newsletter for children. The web site address is www.turtle-tracks.org. It will also house Mantle Rock Publishing. Long term plans include construction of a living village and teaching center, Erickson said. "If someone teaches soapmaking, flint knapping, or basketmaking, they can put up their place and do it there." she said. "we'll also do children's crafts, storytelling, jewelry and all different native crafts. If someone is interested, they can stop in the office and fill out a questionnaire, and we will get in touch with them. "I'm also available for presentations throughout the area for organizations, churches or schools. We do flute playing, teach dancing, storytelling and the whole thing." A spring pow-wow and a fall festival are also planned for 2003. Erickson, a native of Eastern Kentucky, said the community has welcomed her group with open arms. She hosted an open house at the center on December 14."There was a huge turnout," she said. "The townspeople have been absolutely so encouraging and so wonderful. I've been so impressed. It's really been fantastic." Erickson can be reached by phone at 270 965-2142.
