I am new to the list today. In searching for my ancestor, Simeon P. Rogers, I just recently learned that he may have come from Union Co., SC and was possibly the s/o William A. Rogers, Jr. (although a listing from Rootsweb.com does not show him.) Simeon was b. 1804 SC. From the Pickens famiy history, I see that he was an overseer on Col Robert Pickens' estate in Three & Twenty, Anderson Co. SC. He married the d/o Col Robert and Martha (Patty) Smith Pickens, Margaret (Peggy) Pickens in 1832. Peggy was b.1816. About 1844, Simeon and Peggy moved to Forsyth Co. GA where I find they are buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Simeon d. 1896 and Peggy in 1915. Simeon and Peggy had 11 children: Nancy S. (1833-1845) William Jefferson (1836-1864) Mary Ann (1838-1921) Robert Pickens (1840-1920) Martha I. (1842- Sara S. (1844-1944) - Aunt Sallie lived to be over 100. James O. (1846- Margaret E (1848-1913) Julia A. (1850-1942) Emeline Franklin (1853-1918) - This is my line. Emeline married Seaborn Madison Westbrook and moved to Cherokee Co. GA Levi Wesley (1854-1890) After searching for many years, I am hopeful that someone has run across my Simeon and can help me verify his parents. I would appreciate any leads. Somebody sent this to another list and I found it fascinating. As long as I have been involved in genealogy, I did not know that England actually banished children to Virginia for all sorts of reasons, even as early as 1619 when the grown-ups were starving! Have a look at this: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ Page down a bit and click on: Family Pages Index On the Family Index Page click: CHILDREN SENT TO VA 1618-1642. But there is lots of good stuff for those of us who have Virginia ancestry (and don't we all?) so look around a bit. Another interesting site. They claim to have the worlds largest collection of obituaries. Most of what I found were gleaned from the Social Security index but you might be luckier. http://www.nationalobituaryarchive.com/ Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
Seeking information about the family of Simpson Hester Blanton b. June 18, 1827 in SC, d. June 6, 1859 in MS. Simpson was and supposedly the son of Edmund and Delilah Tate Blanton. He was married to Mary Ann McPherson, daughter of Alex and Nancy . Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Margaret Gray
I would like to hear form anyone with knowledge of the BACON family in this county from ca. 1775 through 1810, especially those migrating from Virginia through South Carolina. And any with a connection to the COOK or COOKE family. Regards, Gary garluke@juno.com Gary W. & Christie J. Cooper 653 Lover's Lane Road Dawson, Georgia 39842
This came over another list but, since most of us have Virginians in our family trees, it seems a worthwhile cause. Your list mom, Mickey -----Original Message----- From: whoucisme@mindspring.com [mailto:whoucisme@mindspring.com] Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 6:25 PM To: VALOUISA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VALOUISA-L] Petition for genealogists, researchers, historians, cemetery preservationists, etc. Fellow genealogists/researchers, Please consider signing this petition for the protection/preservation of "Neglected, Abandoned and Unlicensed Cemeteries in the State of Virginia", particularly if you are researching your own genealogy originating from Virginia. Also, please consider passing this along to others who may be interested in signing such as other genealogists, historians, heritage groups, VFW groups, etc. Thank you for your support and assistance and my apologies to those who may receive this email more than once via the multiple Rootsweb lists that I am subscribed to and have forwarded this to. Sincerely, Sheri Millikin http://www.PetitionOnline.com/hnvr2003/petition.html To: Virginia's lawmakers (General Assembly & Senate of Virginia) We the undersigned request the approval of the Proposed Legislation on Neglected, Abandoned and Unlicensed Cemeteries in the State of Virginia. This proposed act, which may be cited as the "Neglected, Abandoned and Unlicensed Cemetery Act" (proposed/noted as Chapter 3, Article 22A, ยง 57-22A-1), reads in part the following: (a) The care accorded the remains of deceased persons reflects respect and regard for human dignity as well as cultural, spiritual, and religious values. The General Assembly declares that human remains and burial objects are not property to be owned by the person or entity which owns the land or water where the human remains and burial objects are interred or discovered, but human remains and burial objects are a part of the finite, irreplaceable, and nonrenewable cultural heritage of the people of Virginia which should be protected. (b) It is the intent of the General Assembly that the provisions of this chapter be construed to require respectful treatment of human remains in accord with the equal and innate dignity of every human being and consistent with the identifiable ethnic, cultural, and religious affiliation of the deceased individual as indicated by the method of burial or other historical evidence or reliable information. We ask the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia to approve this proposed legislation to protect all private/family/non-profit cemeteries, particularly those cemeteries which are no longer on property owned by family members, but still frequently visited by family members, researchers, genealogists, and/or historians. These cemeteries contain the remains of Virginia's forebearers. Men, women and children, all who made great sacrifices in a variety of ways to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Many of these cemeteries contain the remains of Native Indians, founders of many areas within Virginia, African-born slaves and their descendants, Revolutionary War heroes and other war Veterans having served in such wars as the War of 1812, War Between the States/Civil War, World War I and even World War II. Please show them the due respect and decency they deserve and approve this proposed legislation so they may, once again, rest in peace. Sincerely,
While I normally discourage commercial postings on this list, several of you have asked me lately about a researcher in Virginia. I have never used this man but I know folks who have and they recommend him highly. FGMURRAY@aol.com Frank Murray makes trips to the Library of Virginia in Richmond frequently. Frank has been doing research for many years. His fees are quite reasonable. Rates: $14.95 per hour Look ups are $10 for the first and $5 for each thereafter Copies are the same charge as LVA charges Mailing is 25 cents plus actual cost of postage Frank knows where to search at LVA for various records and is quick. Frank will travel to your county courthouse of choice if there is enough research to be done to warrant the trip. (Most county records are in LVA.) Does anyone know anything about the JOHN DAVIS who made his will in 1826 and it was recorded in 1830 Union Co? I am interested in his daughter Martha PRESLEY and son JOHN DAVIS. The young John Davis may be my ancestor - he married Rachel Greer in probably Laurens Co about 1822. Her parents died in Tallapoosa Co, Ala and CALVIN PRESLEY witnessed their wills. Could this be the Martha Davis Presley? I would love to hear from someone who might know this family. Janice Craft

I recently went to SCAR and ordered some papers. This family is in these papers but I have not transcribed them yet.... I have very many pages to try to transcribe and all are written by hand, and it would seem several different writers. It may take me some time. Please keep this email and ask me from time to time how it is going, if it is done I would be happy to share! It includes Johnson and Thomas surnames mainly but I have probate and wills as well. Wish me luck on the transcribing!!
