This is my second warning about the Ancestry.com thing. We will have no more discussion. I am assuming that someone had a message in the pipeline before my first message went out. There are no excuses now. If you want to stay on this list CUT IT OUT! Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
Okay, Folks, it is time to get off the Ancestry thing. Enough is enough. And, as list administrator, I reserve the right to suspend membership from anybody who send another message about it! Let's get on with our genealogy. Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
I have to comment on this. I have subscribed to Ancestry.com before also. Before my renewal time came up they always contacted me by phone to ask if I wanted to continue it. They gave me a phone number to call if I did not. I have always been able to get through on that phone number. I wasn't able to continue this last time and called the phone number to cancel. I had no problem. I'm sorry the rest of you have had such bad experiences. :-( All it takes is a phone call. Victoria a few people like you are very lucky, I would like to add that Ancestry.Com for the record is not the only company the does this, many folks I know in business with e-business added in the past 3 years or so have discontinued the "for your convenience or "Automatic Renewal" part of membership", the explanation was/is "too many complaints", no one that has the IQ of grape would swallow "for you convenience nonsense", I know of no one who is so lazy they would not return "with your records on file already "for your convenience" and renew their membership. If you sell a good product and give just decent customer care service you do NOT have to automatically renew anything for anyone's "convenience", let that be a option for everyone not a "requirement for your convenience". This is my last comment (I hope) because the water is just getting muddier, next will be someone with 16 credit cards on file with Ancestry.Com etc. in which I do not believe for one moment this to be the truth, no company would be that stupid nor would Ancestry.Com nor would any person give out that many credit card numbers not even to his mother, nor would Ancestry.Com go that far to keep you as a customer as expressed by the unhappy trooper just a email back or so (not calling anyone a liar), I simply do not believe that statement to be honest (us Texans can streeetch the truth bettern ennyone, I know this is a problem and they know it is a problem because of something called money and greed and until the one's that "are" having this problem with Ancestry.Com stand up and do something together it will continue until good people like Victoria who has had nothing but a positive experience with Ancestry.Com comes in here one day and complains about the her credit card being charged without her permission! Thanks and good luck Betty and please call your bank today and get the card canceled, just tell them the truth, that you feel you are being scammed and you "want" the credit card canceled now! For all genealogy researchers... For many reasons I will not list here, the better practice: Do not use any credit card for any purchase from anyone on the internet. Do not use check by phone. Do not use business or personal checks. Make all payments by postal money order. There is no recurrent billing, no interest charges, no sales or exchanges of your personal financial information plus the added bonuses of peace of mind, more hours of good sleep, savings of millions of dollars in taxpayer dollars and many more hours to do serious genealogy research tracing those elusive ancestors rather than wasting time fighting the fraudulent practices of these companies. I tried to cancel after a year; however, they charged my credit for another annual subscription. They used my previous year's authorization for the charge. When I told Ancestry that I was going to get my credit card company to reverse the charge, they said I could do nothing since they had already been paid. They evidently know how to work the system since my credit card company told me that I should have contacted them prior to the charge since Ancestry provided authorization. Thus nothing could be done. Ancestry finally gave me a cancellatioin which will be good at the end of my current subscription. It is a terrible scam. Folks....I understand your flustration..but please quit this! I subscribed to learn abt my ancestors not a genealogy company faults. Derrell Oakley Teat
Cheryl, HOG WASH! I called your number twice and was left dangling for 45 minutes each time without a live human being answering after the receptionist said she was putting me through to a billing person. The second time I called I told the receptionist DO NOT Hang UP until she had a living human being on the line, and a supervisor came on, and I told him my problem and he said he was unable to help me that I would have to hold the phone until a person from the Billing Office came on....again, I held the phone for 40 minutes (by the clock)....no one helped me. I have already got it in writing that you would remove my name from subscription to Ancestry.Com and not debit my account again, dated several weeks ago, but you have gone ahead and debited it again after issuing that e-mail (in writing). My judgement is based on many years experience in budgets, handling money, banking, etc. If you over-charge 200,000 innocent persons and keep their money (in my case, about $75.00) in your bank for 3 months, makes $15,000.000 you are keeping for your use and drawing at these low interest rates, let say 4% interest (simple, not compounded), you would make $600,000 for a year, but you are only using our for 3 months or a quarter of a year, which would mean you make $150,000 for a minor discrepancy of keeping some innocent soul's money for 3 months and then returning it, and calling it an oversight. Many large business manage their budgets by keeping salaries due on Saturday over until Monday instead of paying on Friday. But keeping poor innocent folk's money for three months is not a discrepancy....it is a willful act of deception. I have done all I can do.....Ancestry.Com must contact my Credit Card company and credit my account for the last $24.00. I still plan to send all my information to the Attorney General's Office for the state of Texas in Austin, and also, give copies of this to my Congressman who I understand that Congress are looking into misuse of selling over the Internet. You did not sign your name, and in the legal world, that is a no, no. If your are an honest person, you would gladly sign your name and attempt to reconcile a customer. Betty Rich Paxson
Derrell with all respect it is not your money and I have been there where Betty is, so just let the folks have their say and you can come back and start your research later, no information is being traded at this time anyway and really no one that is being done in a manner as some of these folks have myself included feels like being suckered and keeping it bottled up, so have a little understanding please....Marvin Steward At 12:47 AM 8/4/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Folks....I understand your flustration..but please quit this! >I subscribed to learn abt my ancestors not a genealogy company faults. >Derrell Oakley Teat > > >==== SCUNION Mailing List ==== >The South Carolina Archives has put some searchable indices on line: http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/default.asp You can find info there for ordering copies of the records. > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

You are a nice person, but it is a scam plain and simple, under staffed? Nay, they will do anything for the extra buck and the sooner all of you start standing up the sooner we can get back to research, let them know you will not be part of a scam and quit/stop membership if you have to, you won't melt or freeze up without them, if they do not get their act together there are many rich folks out there just waiting for a chance like this or a weakness is a better word to jump in with a decent offer that will take Ancestry over or put them out of business one of the two, I have been buying business's all most of my 70 years and I can smell a fall a mile off and this my friends is a fall of morals and honesty and management, upper and lower, and with customers as yourselves they will NOT succeed...Marvin Steward Just remember a old friend and fishing buddy of mine here in Texas use to say and most of you heard him say it, "if it looks like a snake, moves like a snake then my friend it must be a snake" my buddy and friend said that, Ross... To: mbarker, I have attempted to call Ancestry.Com (the 800 number) with NO LUCK. Even when Ancestry.Com put it in writing in an e-mail, that they would NOT CONTINUE TO CHARGE MY ACCOUNT, they have continued. My credit card company has been wonderful in crediting my account for the first two charges, but told me to save all my written information in case they need it legally. Some things situations like this are too large for one person to handle....it takes the voice of many in order to be heard. If anyone else has had this problem, let me know and I will put your message in the envelope that I plan to send to the Attorney General's Office and let them judge if this is a problem that needs to be addressed and investigated in order to protect the innocent public. I do not like being forced to fight at age 77 yrs old, however, I do have very strong principles on RIGHTS AND WRONGS, and most folks I know are just plain folks who loves to do genealogy research and are willing to exchange information freely, and would in no way charge nor cheat anyone of a penny. What I found in writing this to Rootsweb Lists, the Lists that gives our information to Ancestry.Com intercepted my letter and would not let it be shown on their lines. My PALMER-L refused to let my message go through. The others have been very accommodating and helpful. I am not attempting to stir up trouble.....I want to bring a serious problem to surface in case there are others facing the same problem. Just like newspapers that brings up a serious common problem, someone out there will notice it and the problems are resolved in a just and fair manner. Thanks for you help. Betty
To Lists Subscribers, I need to find out if the problem I am having with Ancestry.Com is a prevalent problem with others who have signed up for a Free 14 day Free Trial Offer and giving your credit card number and continue to be charged month after month even though you requested in writing to take your name off the 14 - Free Trial Use and requesting that no charges be made to your credit card. On May 14, 2003, there was a 14 day Free Trial Use of Ancestry.Com advertised and I signed up for it. Even though it was advertised as a 14-Day Free Trial Use, Ancestry.Com requested my Credit Card number (which I gave in good faith). After a few days, I realized that they did not offer me much more than I could get on the Free Genealogy Pages. Therefore, I wrote to them and asked that my name be removed from the Free Trial Use, and PLEASE NOT MAKE ANY CHARGES ON MY CREDIT CARD. I failed to get a reply. Every few days I would get an e-mail Newsletter, which I deleted....and I wrote Ancestry.Com to please not send me anything further, and NOT USE MY Credit Card. In June, when I received my Credit Card bill, they had made two (2) month's charges of $24.00 each on my credit card. I, again, wrote them to please remove my name, that I did not use the 14 day Free Trial but 3-4 days, to please not send me any Ancestry.Com information that could be construed as my using Ancestry.Com. However, they continued to send me Newsletters (which I deleted). Finally, I wrote (probably 5-6 e-mails) again and said that my last e-mail would serve as a legal notice and proof that I did not want nor did I sign up for Ancestry.Com. Immediately, before I could finish my e-mail, Ancestry.Com came on and sent me an e-mail stating they would discontinue sending me further info. I thought everything had been reconciled, and when I received my present credit card statement, even after I received that letter stating they would not send further info, they charged $24.00 again. I was wondering if others on these list that have signed up for a 14-Day Free Trial Use of Ancestry.Com has confronted this problem? If so, it should be brought to light. If I felt they gave me or helped me with info that I was looking for, it would have been worth it to spend $24.00/month, however, at the point I am in my genealogy, I need to get that info from Courthouses and Archives so I will have documentation of my genealogy. There are so many good places offered free for other's individuals genealogy, if you want to use it. I would like to hear from anyone else that may have confronted this problem. I called the major credit card company and they charged Ancestry.Com for the charges made on my June billing and reimbursed my account. Now, I have to notify of the charges again made and see if they will again credit my account and try to get their money from Ancestry.Com. I have never felt so VIOLATED.....by trusting a national genealogical business, giving my credit card number willingly, and being cheated, time and time again. Many of us cannot afford an attorney for small charges made against our credit cards, and an attorney probably would not take such a small case. I am a senior citizen, and do not have money to waste (or stolen). The only thing that I am considering since I live in Texas where we have the Deceptive Trade Law is to send all my cross-correspondence and copies of my credit card bill to the State Attorney General's Office, who enforces deceptive trade practices. I love genealogy and have made every effort by mail (in writing) to reconcile this in case it was a mistake, but when they continue to make charges against my credit card for services that I DO NOT WANT and HAVE NOT USED, I feel that I must do what I can to protect myself. There may be many persons who this has happened to and they are not aware of anything they can do about it. Thanks, Betty Rich Paxson
Betty, You can call the credit card company and have the charges reversed. They will investigate and settle the matter for you. Note to BLRIC@aol.com I have had some problems with Ancestry and have known of several more who have had problems with Ancestry. I don't know is their problem is deliberate or if they don't have enough staff to handle subscriptions, etc. This has been going on for two or three years to my knowledge. Therefore,, I believe if Ancestry wants to maintin its credibility, they should employ adequate staff to handle these matters. We, as customers, buy from Ancestry in good faith, and it is very disappointing that they, for some reason, are not able to take care of the clientele. --- BLRIC@aol.com wrote: > To Lists Subscribers, > > I need to find out if the problem I am having with > Ancestry.Com is a > prevalent problem with others who have signed up for > a Free 14 day Free Trial Offer > and giving your credit card number and continue to > be charged month after month > even though you requested in writing to take your > name off the 14 - Free Trial > Use and requesting that no charges be made to your > credit card. > __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? If you are going to a Courthouse to do research, it might be worthwhile checking to see if Dave has a report on them. Often we can profit from the experience of others.
