Greetings, I am researching the John BOYD line in Union County. Supposedly John BOYD arrived in Union District before the Revolutionary War with a land grant from King George the 3rd on Bushy Creek. He came from Ireland with wife and some children. Wife was Jane Barnardoe, or various spellings. Have some info and will share. Many thanks, Jim Allen "The past is never dead. It's not even past." William Faulkner. Searching: Allen, Boyd, Hollingsworth, Palmer, Pratt, Story, Watts.
Hi: I'm looking for info on Samuel Torbert and his wife Susannah Addis Torbert, who moved to SC about 1760. Susannah had a child (Richard) by her previous husband, Richard Addis, who died in 1749. This was in Bucks Cty. PA. She later was taken to court by her former brother-in-law on a charge of bastardy. Apparently she had a child by a person unknown, before she married Sam Torbert and moved to SC. I know that her child Richard was taken to SC, but I'm trying to track down the illegitimate child. Thanks Al Addis
My main Bailey is Susannah Bailey, the daughter of John Harrison Bailey and Mary Winn. She married William Lawson. I think she is my 5th great-grandmother. Some researchers have concluded that Sion Lawson was William's son by his first marriage, but I have a hunch that Susannah Bailey was his mother. The Bailey name has been passed down through many generations of the family, including my great-grandmother's brother whose name was John Bailey Lawson. This naming pattern happened too frequently and too long in the descendants of Sion Lawson, Sr. for Susannah to be a "step" mother I would think. Susannah's brother Harrison Bailey married my 3rd and 4th great-aunt (confusing I know), Margaret Duke. Margaret was the daughter of Major Duke and Elizabeth Drury. Her sister Priscilla married Sion Lawson (making them my 4th great-grandparents). Her sister Amanda "Amy" married Thomas Smith (making them my 3rd great-grandparents). Hello List..... I am still looking for Crawford Medlin b. in SC or NC. I believe his father was Nicholas Medlin, and his mother was a Crawford. He had 5 children, went off to the civil war and was in a hospital in Charleston, SC. not to come back home. believed to have died from wounds. his children were broken up and sent to live with relatives or friends. two twin boys were sent to live with Captain Jones until they were age 21. any info on these families would be appreciated. thanks Reba
Mickey, I want to thank you for all the work you have done on the Union County list, for the information you have posted and assistance freely given to many of us. I hope your health will let you stay with us even though Joe takes over. As always I am looking for information on Kirby, Sparks, Garner, Lipscomb, Bolling (or Boaling), Stott, Owensby and a few I don't recall at the moment. John Kirby appears in Union Co probate records 1808. His wife was Jemima Bolling (Boaling). Jacob Kirby appears in the Union Co 1830 census. His son Ransom Kirby is also in 1830 census and 1870 census. I seem to have lost him between those dates but two of his sons Richard, abt 20 and John, abt 15 bid farewell to their mom and dad and sisters and came to Texas abt. 1878. Joseph Garner is on 1840 census and I suspect his wife Nancy Sparks was right there with him. Shelton Sparks is there in 1840, 1850 and probably 1860 having been murdered in 1864 by Sam Jefferies. Shelton's wife Rebecca Stott also Union Co and if memory serves me correctly she is living next door to Sam on the 1870 census. But the real puzzle for me is Thomas and Elizabeth Owensby on the 1850 census with three children of their own and also William Garner, 13, Peggy Garner, 15 and Joseph 7 living in their household. Have not figured out their connection to the Owensbys or any information on the Garner children. As time permits I will post more specific information for each of these individuals but for now just wanted to toss the names out in case someone else might also be researching these families. I have been preoccupied with numerous other lines in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi and didn't realize I was neglecting all my many ancestors from Union, Cherokee and Spartanburg counties until I saw your call for roll call. With that, I'll say thanks for a job well done. Three parts to this one. 1. Thank you Mickey for all the good work you've done on the list. Hope you are going away though... 2. As your new list admin, I will probably maintain a low profile. Ask questions, answer questions, post information. I only ask that you be nice and stay on topic. If there are problems, I will address them OFF LIST. So just because you don't see me responding to a problem don't think I'm not doing it. For geneology, I'm on the list as pastorjoe99@yahoo.com. For list business I prefer that you write to me at either SCUNION-admin@rootsweb.com (1st choice) or at yjh_lstmgr@yahoo.com. 3. Responding to Mickey's roll call... I am descended from Drury HARRINGTON/Rachel PETTY who moved to Union County area toward the latter part of the Revolutionary War, through their son Wiley Allen HARRINGTON who married Margared BOYD and moved on to Georgia about 1830 or so. But I am researching lots of families that were in the upstate SC area 1770-1840 time frame. Good hunting Joe Harrington SCUNION list manager
Hello -- I just recently joined the list. My Union County surnames/families are Lawson, Smith, Duke, Bailey, Drury and Littlefield. My 2nd great-grandparents migrated from Union County to Cherokee County, Georgia in the mid-1850s. They were Nevel Riley Lawson, the son of Neville Lawson and Tempe Unknown and Rebecca Smith, the daughter of Thomas Smith and Amanda "Amy" Duke. Below are my three major Union County lines - Lawson, Smith and Duke. Lawson Tempia Lucinda Lawson (great-grandmother) Nevel (Neville) Riley Lawson (2nd great-grandfather) Neville Lawson (3rd great-grandfather) Sion Lawson, Sr. (4th great-grandfather) William Lawson (5th great-grandfather) Smith Rebecca Smith (2nd great-grandmother) Thomas Smith (3rd great-grandfather) Leonard Smith (4th great-grandfather) William Smith III (5th great-grandfather) Duke Amanda "Amy" Duke (3rd great-grandmother) Major Duke (4th great-grandfather) Joseph Duke (5th great-grandfather) ~ and~ Priscilla Duke (4th great-grandmother) Major Duke (5th great-grandfather) Joseph Duke (6th great-grandfather) My two big mysteries right now are mothers in my Lawson line. Researchers are divided over which William Lawson marriage Sion Lawson, Sr. was born to. I think he was the son of Susannah Bailey due to the great number of "Baileys" in subsequent generations -- too many I would think for the name to be a "step" relationship. (It's only a hunch and not proven, though!) Tempe/Tempa Lawson's maiden name is unknown. I think she was the daughter of either Shadrack Duke or John Pridmore -- both these two men had daughters born in Union County around 1800 named Tempe. I have been unable to determine who either of these women married (or if they married). I have also tried to find either Shadrack Duke or John Pridmore's will, but no luck so far. Hope to hear from new "cousins" soon! I'm trying to verify for sure who the parents of John Williams are, who was born Oct. 1791 in NC or SC, and died in Hancock Co., IL in 1867. I thought his parents were John Williams, b. 1762, and Margaret McCorkle, b. 1768 and married in Mecklenberg Co., NC. Now another researcher has said the 1791 John's father was Nathan Williams of Charleston, SC. Any help? Before moving to IL, John married Mary Jones, and they were parents of Lemuel Williams, b. 1814 in SC. Sally Williams
I am still searching for any and all tidbits of information on the BRIGGS family who, in the late 1700s, lived in the little triangle where Spartanburg, Union and Laurens Counties connect. The progenitor of all these BRIGGS' seems to have been John who died in 96 District in 1783 and he was almost certainly a descendant of the Surry County, Virginia BRIGGS family. I just can't make the final connections. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
I am still searching for the parents, siblings, any background information on Thomas WRIGHT who was in Union County from about 1784. He married Lillie (maiden name unknown) and had children: Nancy b. North Carolina m. Wm. McClanahan, William Wofford, b. NC ca 1782, m. Esther Shipp, Robert, m. Martha Dixon, Mary m. Rev. William S. Briggs, a daughter who married William Craig, Elizabeth m. Carter Livesay, Martha m. Elijah Craig, a daughter who married Francis McClanahan, Tabitha who m. John Thompson. Especially, I would like to know Thomas' relationship to the "Rich Tory," William Wofford who deeded land to Wright in 1784, Union County, stating that the land was intended as Thomas Wright's inheritance. As stated above, William and Lillie named their eldest son, William Wofford Wright. The whole family moved to Tennessee. Thomas died in Hickman County about 1819. Any "educated guesses" appreciated.
