    1. Re: [SCUNION] Re: HUGHES to LU
    2. LU Thank you very much for the information -- it's new to me. I'm going to Salt Lake tomorrow for a week of research & will look up the publications you listed. Do you happen to know if the ADDIS, WOODSON, or other families you named had a Sarah A. E. (last name unknown) born ca 1825 who married William M. HUGHES ca 1845? That's my line. Again, thanks tons. 3. Lynne, do your Rogers have ties to VA? My John Rogers/Rodgers was born in 1790 in Fauquier Co., VA and moved on to Smith Co., TN. In the 1850 Smith Co. census in John's household there is a William Rogers/Rodgers, age 20, born in SC. I have not been able to determine who this William is and have not found him after 1850. 3. I am looking for the parents of Claude Perrin Johnson b. 1879 in probably Buffalo in Union county. He married Ellen Madora Sumner b. unknown. These are my Mother's parents. She had brothers Claude Franklin, Pet, LeRoy and sisters Lula and Lillie. I think they came to Union county from Franklin, N.C. but I have no dates nor proof of this. Any help, however small would be most appreciated. Barbara Propes McCollum

    1. [SCUNION] Briggs
    2. Mickey - My ancester, James Jefferson Briggs, who we believe is the son of John and Hannah Briggs of Union Co, SC, married Rebecca George, daughter of Thomas George, of Union Co, SC. This is mostly assumed from the following deed: 16 Apr 1816, Union Co, SC - John & Hannah Briggs Sold 225 acres incl mill for $1,255 to Thomas George. Bounded Pacolet River on N. by Portman's Creek on W by Wm. Hames [also our relative], Coleman Fowler [also related through dau's marriage to Timothy Haney], & a tract owned by the said George on S & by land belonging to Mr. Giles & the said Thomas George on E..... Witnessed by Timothy & James Haney..... Also, there is a later deed where Thomas George deeds some land to his son-in-law, James Jefferson Briggs, etc. Since this land is on the Pacolet River and Portman's Creek, that would seem to be in the northern part of Union Co., whereas the Briggs you refer to is living in the southwestern part of Union Co., maybe near Cross Keys? We do not know anything about John and Hannah Briggs, such as, other children, born / death records, etc. Do you have any information that might suggest our John Briggs might be the same as your John Briggs? Thanks for any help you might offer. Sue Wilson

    1. Re: [SCUNION] Roll Call: Torbert and Addis
    2. Al Addis
    3. Lu: Thanks for the Addis anecdote - I hadn't heard it, so can't say if it was true or not. But we should never let the facts get in the way of a good story! Also have to say that I haven't done much research on the Addises in SC, so I don't know if that John you found could be Susannah's illegitimate child. Of course, I'm hoping that the child was Jonathan, since I can trace back to him, but can't find his parents. It's curious that the Addis name seems to pop up in various places; we know how they got to Bucks Cty. PA, and to New England and SC, but I've seen reference to a Thomas Addis (father of 2 children I can't trace) in New Jersey, who I can't relate to the Bucks line, even though they're geographically pretty close. And there was a Thomas Ades in Montgomery Cty PA in the early 1700s - don't know where he came from, either. Richard's older brother Simon (who was apparently the son of the elder Richard's first wife Mary/Maria Wyckoff) apparently went to the Middlesex Cty NJ region as a child - I guess to live with his grandparents. He's pretty well documented as having been in the Revolution, gotten a pension, etc. But strangely, the PA Gazette newspaper has an article in the 1780s referring to Simon Addis's plantation in Bucks Cty. Maybe there were 2 Simon's? Seems unlikely. Anyway - about Susannah - there is a court record in the Bucks Cty Historical Society, from June 1752, saying that it was affirmed by John Addis and Jacob Benet (?) that Susannah Addis "....did commit Fornication with a certain Person to the Inquest aforesaid unknown and did permit the same unknown person then and there to beget a Bastard Child on the body of her the (word illegible, but probably "same") Susannah....." I 'd like to find out who the unknown father was (although I'm not sure I want him as a relative, if he left Susannah to be taken to court alone), but mostly I'm wondering if the child could be the Jonathan Addis whose parents I've been searching for. >If you ever get any leads about that, I'd love to hear them. > Al Addis

    1. Re: [SCUNION]Morgan/Palmer
    2. Christie, Thank you for giving me Jere Cox's e-mail address. There were a few folks that I corresponded with that had a lot of Palmer information a few years ago, and I needed to ask him some questions. Christie, you mentioned that your family descended from Parmenas and Mary Ann Draper Palmer. From the research I have that names their children, which one of their children do you descend? My Palmore/Palmers came in to the Pendleton District (Anderson/Pickens Counties) before 1800s. In the upper part of SC or the Old 96 District, and in the 1790 census, there were 10 Palmer families in Union Co., 4 in Edgefield Co., who all seem to be part of the Virginia Palmers. There were 2 Palmers in York County (Phillip and Joseph) who may not be part of the other Palmers, but I am not sure. By 1800, a William and John Palmer are in Pendleton District. Also Solomon Palmer, a different group of Palmers appear in Pendleton but they are from NJ and they remain in SC a few years and move on into GA, but they are not the Virginia Palmers. By 1830, there is a William, Jesse, and Chandler Palmer (spelled Charles on census). I am out of Chandler Palmer, who was born about 1796-1800, but died in 1845. I believe these folks are part of the Virginia Palmers due to their retaining their religion Methodist Episcopal (which is a branch off the Anglican religion which was the state religion of Virginia. The Tidewater people of Virginia kept their English Anglican religion fairly faithfully. My Palmers in Anderson Co., SC, gave land to build the Methodist Episcopal Church and remained faithful to that religion. So, that is why I believe they are part of the group that came into Union Co, in late 1700s after they received the state land grants. Some genealogies that have been submitted state that Chandler's father was Jesse, without proof, and he may be. If that is so, Thomas Palmer, Jr. had a Jesse. No Wills nor Deeds have verified that. However, no child in the family was ever named Jesse. I believe he might be an uncle. Chandler's first son was named WILLIAM Andrew Palmer. I tend to hand on that name as it is carried on down. Would you mind giving me a thumb nail lineage of your family, so I can follow your line and see how it fits into the others. This is mine beginning with me: 1. Betty ROBERTSON Rich 2. f: Earl D. ROBERTSON, b: 1890, TX; d: 1947 TX. m: Annie J. Goodwin 3. gf: William A. Robertson, b: 1848, Franklin Co., GA, d: 1900, TX gm: Elizabeth PALMORE/PALMER, b: 1853, Anderson Co., SC d: 1916, Angelina Co., TX 4. ggf: JAMES W. PALMER, b: ca 1830, SC, d: 1865 in Point Lookout, Maryland Union Prison ggm: Rebecca Jane Hutchins, b: abt 1834, SC d: TX (?) 5. gggf: CHANDLER PALMER, b: ca 1798-1800, SC ?) d: 1845, SC gggm: Martha Thomas, b: 1800, SC, d: 1886, SC So, I am stuck here and there are only a few folks researching the Anderson Co., SC Palmers, and my grandmother was an only child making it difficult for me to find someone who is also going this research to share. The one I know told me she only picked Jesse as Chandler's father because he was the oldest. No proof! I know they are part of the original group from VA but just cannot find which one is Chandler's father. There was a grandchild named Robert Chandler Palmer, so I have wondered if Chandler is out of Robert Palmer, son of Thomas Palmer, Jr., died in 1800 in Union Co. Would love to get your thoughts on this brick wall. Thanks for giving me Jere Cox's address. Best regards, Betty

    3. Here's some of what I found on the Hughes, Hughes in the late 1700's was spelled Hughs but it was the same family that always lived next to my Addis family but I noticed in the 1800's they started spelling it with an e on the end. At least on of the Hugh(e)s was always listed with any legal papers with an Addis', I figured they must of been friends. I know that Richard Addis served with John Joseph Hughs in Rev war because he is listed in Richards Rev war papers that I have. John Joseph Hughs was Captain Joseph Hughs. He became a Captain in the Rev war. Union County SC Deed Abstracts C, 197-198 pg 116 29 June 1791 William Savage sells his land to Daniel Nogher (shoemaker), The land adjoined, Richard Addis, John Joseph Hughs and Benjamin Woodson. Their land was on Broad River. The actual sale of the land was on 17 aug 1784. In the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Volume XX, Number 2, Spring, 1992 you'll find where in 1828 Joseph Hughes (one of John Josephs Hughs sons) is juror for a coroners inquisitions. This Joseph Hughes was always mentioned with my Jospeh Addis (son of Richard Addis) (this is a guess, but I would say these two where friends because they later witness land transactions for each other). This Joseph Hughes middle intial is F. John Joseph Hughs sometime called John or sometime Joseph along with John Joseph, lived next to Richard Addis, and James Savage, Benjamin Woodson, in late 1700's on Broad River, Union county, SC. South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral REsearch VolumeXVII Number 2 Spring 1989 on June 13 1818 Joseph and Richard Hughes gave their oath that James (Samuel?) Adis was the man found drowned in Broad River. In Richard Addis Will the land he left to his granddaughter was on what was called, "Hughs Creek waters of Broad River". "Union Co., Heritage" 1981 Edition Story #286 Thomas and William Hughes Family This story mentions a settlement that was five miles down the Broad River from the Lockhart Shoals. The Hughes family settled there, and they were joined by other families from VA and NC. The Addis family was one of those, along with the families of Smith, Cook, McLanney, Albertson, Culbertson and Harrison. Thomas, William, Richard and Joseph F. Hughes are just some of the sons of John Joseph Hughs. John Joseph was settled in this area in 1784 but I don't know when he settled this area. If I find more info I will send it. Hope this helps.. 3. Dear Al, There is one name that I came across on a SC Roster of Revolutionary war soldiers. all that was printed about this is: "Addis, John m. Sarah_________ He was killed in service during 1782. Annuitants Claims." I couldn't find anything else. No number or other info in order to have his papers pulled and read. No one could help me when I sent off for his Military papers, they said I didn't have enough info. Do you know who this Addis was? Could it of been Susannah's ill-child. 3. Dear Al, I did not know that Susannah had another child. I would be interested in this information also. What do you have so far. I know her brother in law took her to court for the other children of Richard Addis because they wanted the tannery back from her and Torbert's control and when Susannah and Samuel lost, it wasn't long after that they moved to SC. I know you've done some extensive research on the Addis's and I was wondering if you ever heard of a story of 3 Addis brothers. One came home and shot his wife in bed with the sheriff and moved west but not that far from the rest of the family. One of the brothers eventually went north and one stayed in original settlement. I was told this story by a gggreat aunt and have not been able to prove this story with any of the Addis's I have found so far. I don't know how far back this was in the line but my aunt said it was always told as a story to pass down to the next generation but upon researching I have not been able to prove anything about it.
