    3. >From Stranraer and Wigtown Free Press December 20th, 2012 "The Way We Were" December 22 1887 PRESENTATION CAPTAIN McMicken (a native of the Isle of Whithorn), of the Cunard steamer, 'Umbria'. was presented on Thursday last, in the rooms of the Liverpool Marine Board, with a gold watch, the gift of the President of the United States, in recognition of the recipient's humane services in rescuing the crew of the American fishing schooner, 'Lilian Baxter' in September last. The Umbria was homeward bound and just approaching the banks of Newfoundland, when a vessel, apparently in distress, and about four miles distant, was sighted by her officers. Two days previously, the vessel had been struck by a heavy sea, which carried away her masts and washed three men overboard, two of whom, however, were subsequently rescued by their comrades. A lifeboat was immediately lowered and manned, and the sufferers, 13 in number, brought on board the Umbria, where it is needless to say, they received every kindness and attention, and were subsequently landed at Liverpool. As already stated, President Cleveland forwarded a valuable gold watch to be presented to Captain McMickan in recognition of his services on the occasion referred to, the presentation being made by Mr Alderman Shallcross in presence of a number of influential ship owners, together with several of the officers and crew.
