    3. I have McHARRIEs connecting into my family tree way back in the 1820s. My 2X great grandfather's sister Jean DOUGLAS married a William(?) McHARRIE. Their sister Elizabeth DOUGLAS married Robert McNEILLIE (McNEELIE) in 1824 and their daughter Martha McNEILLIE married William McHARRIE clerk of works to the Earl of Stair. William and Martha's fourth son was called Robert Campbell McHARRIE which might tie in with Bruce's post about a CAMPBELL link. Below is as much as I can read from a photo I took of William McHARRIE's grave in Stoneykirk graveyard. (The stone is in very good order but the sun on the photo has obstructed some of the words.) "Erected ( ) a number of friends (in) memory of William McHarrie Clerk of Works to the Earl of Stair who died 22 September 1865 aged 48 (?) years His eldest son William McHarrie accountant Stranraer died 22 December 1886 aged 32 (?) years His fourth son Robert Campbell McHarrie manager Canadian (Band?) of Commerce died at Peterboro Ontario Canada 6(?) January 1902(?) His wife Martha McNeillie died at Stranraer 22 January 1898(?) aged 74 years Alexander McHarrie sixth son died 30th July 191(4?) aged 48(?) The ( ) of Subscriptions was presented to his family as a mark of respect (to?) their father." Anyone OVER 15 was to have their age rounded DOWN to the year ending in a 5 or a 0. Ages 15-19 would be seen as 15. Ages 20-14 would be seen as 20. Ages 21-24 would be seen as being 20. That leaves the door open for someone to perhaps be 35 and report their age as 34....they'd then be RECORDED as being 30. I have a relative who was 50 in 1841 at the census [just had their 50th birthday], they reported to the Enumerator they were 44...making them show up as 40 on the census, a full 10 years off their correct age. How did they know anyone would ever be viewing these same documents long past their deaths ? Children's ages were supposed to be the actual age, however I've seen a few that were also rounded down, the Enumerator did not follow the instructions. Much better to use the 1851 Census for ages than the 1841 Census but still must use caution as there were quite a lot of creative ages given to Enumerators and not always by the subject themselves. I don't see the John McHARRIE (b abt 1813) at Carngaan in the 1841 and 1851 census, in any later census, nor a matching death in Scottish civil records. Perhaps he emigrated, or died before 1855. There may be another means of assigning him as a son of the above couple. His daughter Euphemia shows up as a niece of John & Jane SPENCE at Ringuinea in 1871. Jane SPENCE is enumerated as Jane McHARRIE in the 1861 census, and is of suitable age to be a daughter of John McHARRIE & Isabella CAMPBELL. She died age 70, parish of Stoneykirk, in 1877. If you obtain her death registration from Scotlandspeople, you should be able to check if that is the case. Euphemia died age 35, parish of Stoneykirk, in 1879. I don't have a connection - my curiosity just got the better of me. Regards, Bruce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
